  1. Author Digital Toolkit www.ariafiction.com

  2. Key Ebook Retailers

  3. Social Media Top Tips Show your support to the retailers Where appropriate, be sure to link to your titles on ebook retailer (such as Kindle, iBooks, Kobo) sites, and tag the retailer to show your support Be as visually appealing with your posts as possible Include photos of your book covers in posts, and share fun images and photos you ve taken Show off your titles Make sure your About Page includes the titles of your books (author of so and so), and share your jackets in your posts about them Update your cover photo to show your most recent publication/great review Engage with the readers Share readers reviews of your books and acknowledge them (thank you for this lovely review, etc.) Share your personality! Don t dedicate your Facebook page solely to selling some copies. From time to time it s good to share what you ve been up to (an insight into the writing process perhaps), or articles and images you like, or even other books you enjoyed! This will make your page more personal and less of a hard-selling platform

  4. How to Set Up a Facebook Account If you do not already have a personal Facebook account, go to: https://www.facebook.com Fill in the details on the Sign Up page (name, email address, password etc.). Your login details will be the email address you provided + the password of your choice You can now set up a page for yourself, so that people can like you, as opposed to having to add you as a friend

  5. How to set up a Facebook page Once you have a Facebook account set up Click on the little arrow in the top right hand corner, and select Create a Page Select the Artist, Band or Public Figure from the options, and then select Author , and add your name Add details such as a profile picture, cover photo, about you , and you re ready to start building a following

  6. Facebook Glossary Sharing: When you click the share button on a post, it will appear on your Facebook timeline (Facebook s equivalent of a homepage) and your followers will be able to see what you have shared Liking/Commenting: If you enjoy a post/photo/video you can click on its like button. You can also leave a comment in the comment box just below it. Similar to sharing , when you like/comment on a post, your followers will see that you have done so Newsfeed: Your newsfeed is the page that shows you what the people you follow on Facebook are up to. Any activity they have on Facebook (new posts, photos, sharing, commenting, liking, etc.) will show up on your newsfeed, as will your activity on theirs Pinned Post: Your timeline and newsfeed are organised chronologically (i.e. the most recent posts are at the top). However, if there is a particular post you want to keep at the top for your friends to see, you can pin it to your timeline. Simply click the pencil button in the upper right hand corner of that post. It will stay at the top of your timeline for seven days, even as you make other posts.

  7. How to Set Up Twitter Go to https://www.twitter.com and click the Sign Up link Enter your Full Name: this is important but it is not your username; it is simply how people will find you on Twitter Choose a Username: very important as it is how you will be known on Twitter. It is what Twitter refers to as your handle . Try to keep it similar to your Facebook or Website name if possible. You might want to use your first name and surname for this, but chances are the combination is already taken by someone else. This is when you should choose a slightly amended version: e.g. if EmilyJones is unavailable , you can check for MrsEmilyJones, Emily_Jones, Emily-Jones, etc. Bio: This is where you include a few sentences about yourself. For example: author of so and so, loves cycling, etc. Twitter Display Picture: Upload a photo of yourself (preferably the same one you have for Facebook). Try to upload a photo as soon as possible, otherwise you will have the default twitter photo: an egg!

  8. Twitter Glossary Mention: A mention is any tweet that includes another user s username following the @ sign, such as @JkRowling (see a mention on Amanda Prowse below) Reply: A reply is a special type of mention , where a Twitter user has clicked reply under a tweet to comment on it. A reply is identifiable because it begins with @username and it allows readers to follow the thread of the conversation with the view conversation link Retweet: When another user re-posts one of your tweets, it s called a retweet. Retweets show up with either the retweet symbol or a RT at the beginning of the tweet. This is the same idea of sharing a post on Facebook

  9. Twitter Glossary DM: DM stands for Direct Messages and it is Twitter s version of emails and Facebook inboxes. You can send a private message to one of your followers on Twitter and only they will be able to see it Hashtag: Hashtags are key words that users can use to tag tweets in order to participate in larger conversations and tweet chats. To use a hashtag, simply type the hash or number sign (#) followed by your keyword. Note that space or punctuation will end the hashtag, so if you have a multi-word keyword, make it all one word. Examples of big hashtags: #MothersDay, #Superbowl. But you can also create your own hashtag: #excited #SunnyDay, etc EXTRA Twitter Top Tips! Remember: there is a 140 character limit on Tweets, so keep them short and sweet Shorten your links: Use Bitly.com to shorten your links, and make the most of those 140 characters Engage with your followers: actively re-tweet, and like tweets by others this will help grow your following

  10. Website Tips Website Design: a clean, easy-to-navigate website works best! Choose a theme you think generally suits the genre(s) of your books (e.g. understated colours/tones for mystery; bright for romance, etc.) Show off your books: Tell visitors about yourself, and include a list of all your published books (preferably with covers) Make it easy for readers to purchase: Include obvious Buy Now or Purchase Here tab which links to your titles and retailers Grow your following: Have a subscribe button clearly-marked on the homepage, as well as links to your social media (Facebook, Twitter etc) News updates: Your homepage should display any upcoming events/launches/releases, as well as your latest publication. This could be in the form of a blog Keep in touch: Have a Contact section with details of how you wish readers to get in touch (usually email/Facebook inbox) and include a picture of yourself

  11. Online Author Pages There are two main retail-focused author pages that we suggest you claim Amazon and Bookbub. These pages are designed to help connect authors with readers. Anyone that has bought a previous book will be alerted through your profile when you have a new title being released. Claim your Amazon author page: https://authorcentral.amazon.co.uk/ You ll be asked to sign in to your Amazon account (or create one if you don t already have one) and follow the steps to show Amazon which titles you have written. You can also add details about yourself, including a photo, and your bio Claim your Bookbub author page (US only currently): Bookbub is a daily newsletter in the US, Canada, India and the UK that alerts subscribers to ebooks that are on offer. We will submit for these slots on your behalf https://partners.bookbub.com Make sure you select Author as your role Once you ve logged in, you ll see a page that says Manage Your Author Profile you can claim your Author Profile there
