Lil is about to begin her journey to Egypt with the Mendoza family I hope she makes it to the train on time! I don t think I would travel to Egypt by train now. In fact, I went in Egypt on a plane in 2009 gosh that was before most of you were born! Here is a picture of my family on the way home from our holiday (can you see my mop of hair resting on my dad s shoulder?) I have a feeling that Lil s journey will look quite different .

Comprehension questions for Chapter 11 How much have you understood? Remember to refer back to the text to find the answers to these questions. You can write your answers on any piece of paper at home, or discuss them with someone but your answers must be in full sentences. My answers are on the next slide. 1. Which day were they travelling? 2. The word heavy usually refers to weight. Does the traffic was heavy mean that it weighed a lot? 3. How did you feel when Lil nearly missed the train? 4. What is holding court ? (Tulip says her mum was holding court in the cocktail lounge .) 5. Why wouldn t Lil be looking forward to sleeping with the jar? 6. Why do you think Lil chooses not to tell Tulip why she was caned?
Here are the answers I would give the questions set. I have written my answer in blue and my explanation of how I know think this is in green. 1. 2. Which day were they travelling? They are travelling on Monday. Page 1. The word heavy usually refers to weight. Does the traffic was heavy mean that it weighed a lot? No, here saying that the traffic was heavy means there was a lot of it. My understanding of the word and phrase. How did you feel when Lil nearly missed the train? This is your opinion. I felt sad for her at first because she was so excited to be able to go, as was her Mum. Deep down though, I knew she would manage to get it! What is holding court ? (Tulip says her mum was holding court in the cocktail lounge .) Holding court means that you are surrounded by people who are listening to you and think you are interesting. You are holding people s attention. Tulip s mum is doing this because she has so many interesting stories to tell, so everyone in the lounge is listening to her. My own understanding, you might have had to look this up which is fine. You might say that I am holding court in class hopefully! Why wouldn t Lil be looking forward to sleeping with the jar? Lil wouldn t be looking forward to sleeping with the jar because she found it difficult to sleep with it before it gives her bad dreams and is very distracting. Remembering from earlier in the story. Why do you think Lil chooses not to tell Tulip why she was caned? This is your opinion. I think she didn t tell her for two reasons. Firstly, she didn t want Tulip to know the horrible things the girls had been saying. Secondly, she didn t want Tulip to feel bad that Lil had been caned because she was sticking up for her. 3. 4. 5. 6.
