Lights Out Canada - Why bother turning out the lights?
Turn out the lights Massey! If you have not already done so, we invite your class to participate in Lights Out Canada by turning off your classroom lights for the TAG period and if you want, for the rest of the day.
What is Lights Out Canada? Lights Out Canada is an annual event during which schools across the country turn off their lights and spend the day learning about climate change and what youth can do to take action. http://lightsoutcanada.tpweb.ca/?page_id=10
Lights Out Canadas goals: Educate students and teachers about the dangers of climate change. Provide participants with a host of ideas as to how to change everyday habits and empower them to lead more sustainable lifestyles. Encourage schools to be aware of environmentally unfriendly practices, and revise them. http://lightsoutcanada.tpweb.ca/?page_id=10
Last year: 170 000 students and teachers in almost 400 schools participated in our 6thannual event, held in partnership with Earth Day Canada on April 21, 2011. Want to watch Rick Mercer? Click here for a short video on the campaign from last year.
Yes..we know We understand it is a little weird to turn off the lights yet still rely on overhead projectors but there are still reasons to participate even if we still rely on the use of energy throughout the day.
It creates awareness Unfortunately humanity is impacting the world in many different ways. Turning off the lights for an hour, or a day, raises awareness of our reliance on energy. It is easy to take for granted how much we rely on cheap and affordable energy.
It creates discussion Turning off the lights can have people asking questions. We hope people are asking questions. Why are we doing this? How will this help? What impact will this have? Being skeptical is great. Ask questions, be curious, explore for answers. Any discussion that seeks to understand how we are impacting the world is a good discussion.
It does save energy Having lights on all day does use energy. Using less energy reduces our impact on the environment. To produce electricity to power the lights, we use a variety of sources in Canada, including oil, nuclear power, wind power, and coal. In Manitoba we use hydropower which is renewable but it does necessitate the construction of dams which requires fossil fuels. Creating dams also changes water levels which can drastically alter ecosystems.
What else can we do? Our goal is by the end of today s TAG period you will have a number of simple actions that you can perform at school, at home, or even on the road that will help reduce our impact on the world and our reliance on energy.
