Back in the days it was known that people, primarily men loved to do 3 things. 1. Drink 2. Gamble 3. Women
Yoshiwara, a well known prostitution district was one of the famous sites commoners would go and spend a day or even nights at. Men would go and stay the nights with prostitutes and drink sake.
Some men would go to work during the day and then go to Yoshiwara for the night. Hey! I m home now!!.. I said I m home now! Kamebou it seems like your father s home go open the door for him. Kamebou goes and opens the door, he starts to talk to his father but gets pushed aside.
Kamebou?! Are you okay?.. Why did you push him? Kamebou was waiting for you and wanted to share his day with you and you just shoved him aside. What if he gets hurt? He s not going to get hurt just by falling stop talking and bring me sake!
Sake? Theres no sake here!.. You went and spend all the money at Yoshiwara again. Didn t you? You know I can take this but your son, you have to think about him. You can t even manage to buy him food to eat since you spend it all at Yoshiwara.
See, this is what happens, I come home and all I get is yelled at. If you don t like your life here get out! Get out!!
If you say so I will leave, but remember there were people who helped out with this marriage and if we are parting ways write the divorce papers. What? The divorce papers?? You know that I can t write .
The neighbor comes in and scolds Kumagorou for spending money at Yoshiwara and not taking care of his family. Otoku apologizes for her husband being drunk and the neighbor goes home. Kame, you see how your father and mother are now. It s better for all of us if we just leave the house.
Mom, dont worry about me. Ill be okay Dad it s your fault, it s all your fault. It s because you go to that Yoshiwara place SHUT UP! Kamebou starts crying as Otoku tries to stop him and tells him to say his good-bye to his father. Otoku takes Kamebou and leaves the house.
Kumagorou continues to go to Yoshiwara, sooner or later he brings the women to his house. Even though they are woman, they are prostitutes from Yoshiwara, they don t cook or clean like a housewife would. Kumagorou asks for home cooked meals but the woman do not oblige to him . Sooner or later the woman would say they are going to the bath house and wouldn t come back.
Kumagorou starts to realize how he had an amazing life with Otoku but when he realized this, it was too late. He decides to change himself for the better and started working hard. 3 years pass by-
Bantou comes in to check on a job Kumagorou has been working on. While Bantou and Kumagorou walk, they talk about Kumagorou and how Otoku left him. So do you think about Otoku? No, I don t actually that s a lie I don t think about Otoku, but I still think about Kamebou.
Oh! Kamebou how old is he now? Oh yea, it s been 3 years now He must be big. A few days ago, I saw a boy that resembled Kamebou and I called out Kamebou s name. The boy turns around and was so confused. As I was apologizing I just couldn t stop crying I was so stupid, I know it s too late to realize it but I was just so stupid then.
Yea, you were definitely stupid then Kuma hey Kuma!.. Isn t that? Isn t that Kamebou over there? What? Where?? Oh my.. it is Kame!.. and he s moving.. Well, of course he s moving! Call him over here! Oh no, I can t!
Oh just do it! Yea and I ll see you at the job site later on yea, later KAME!! Hey! It s me do you know who I am?...It s me, dad! Oh it s dad.. Kamebou tells his friends to go ahead and goes over to Kumagorou.
Oh! it is you, dadit is you Yes, it is me it s your dad. You ve gotten so big! You got big too dad! So, how are you doing? Yea, I m doing well.
Good, glad to hear that. So does your father take care of you? What? You know does your father take good care of you? What are you talking about..you don t show your face for 3 years and how can you ask me if you re taking good care of me? No, I m talking about your new dad!
New dad?? There is no new dad!!.. You re my ONLY dad! So..it s only been you and your mother? Yea! It s been me and mom only! There s no new dad! You re the dad!! How are you guys making a living?
Well, moms been making money by working as a seamstress. She takes old kimonos and pulls it apart, washes it and then puts it together and me, I work by helping out the neighbors with chores and get money for that. That s how we re making money together.
I see, your getting old enough to help out your mother, huh? Yea, I help out mom all the time. So, does mom say anything?
Eh? Well, does mom say anything?? About what? You know about me?
Oh yea, she talks about you all the time She says your father is not the bad one, it s all the sake s fault. When he drinks he turns into a horrible man. She always says that father is a very nice man, and it s all the sake s fault She always says that. I see, she really says that?
Yea.. so dad.. what about you? Are you still with the woman from Yoshiwara?? Stop! Don t raise your voice!! You.. you over there why are you standing there listening to our conversation? I stopped seeing the woman fromYoshiwara, and even stopped drinking sake too. I m serious about work.
Really? So you stopped drinking?? And the woman from Yoshiwara is gone too? And you work all the time too??... that s how you re able to wear a pretty kimono like that. Hey.. you again! So, do you want an allowance? Really! An allowance?? Yea, put out your hand.
Thank you!!....But this is 50 senno, I dont want it It s okay, just take it. But it s 50 sen that s a lot of money. No, just take it...but promise me one thing, don t tell anyone that the money is from me. Why?
Just tell your mother that you got the money from a stranger. Are you sure you re going to give this to me?... Thank you!... wow! 50 sen!! Dad? Is it okay with you, if I bought shoes with this money? Shoes?
Yea, shoes for school, I m the only one that goes to school in geta.. everyone else goes to school in shoes. I keep on asking mom to buy me shoes and she says later, but she never buys them for me. So, with this 50 sen, is it okay to buy a pair of shoes?
You wanted shoes? Yea! It s okay, right? Its okay to buy shoes right?? Yea buy anything you want buy shoes, buy anything your dad is going to buy everything you want . Thank you What happened with your forehead? Did you get into a fight?
Oh this? No, it s not a fight the other day my friends and I were playing with swords and fake killing each other. I got killed so I squatted but the boy who killed me said, hey dummy you just died, you can t squat you have to lie on the floor. But I told him that I can t lie on the floor because my kimono would get dirty. Then he told me there s no talking back and he hit me on the forehead, that s when I got a cut.
People..and how they make fun of others.. did you get mad? Mad oh yea!...definitely mad, mom got mad too. She asked me who hurt me and I told her, but all she said was it may hurt but just tolerate it. She said that we get jobs from that family and also they give us gifts so we can t go complain to them right now. So I just decided to be patient about it.
I see, sorrysorry you have to go through that. I m okay! I have to tolerate things or else mom cries. I don t know why but for every little thing mom starts crying. Mom s a crybaby!
By the way, you used to like eel. Do you still like eel? I ll treat you to eel for lunch tomorrow. Eel?! Really??
So after school tomorrow, I ll wait for you here. Go home once to put your bag away and don t let your mother know your meeting with me. Just pretend your going to go play outside.
Okay! So, I ll get to see you tomorrow too?! I ll see you after school... and I m going to go now so mom doesn t get too worried about me.
Im home! Kame, all your friends came home already... where have you been? I ve been worried about you. I never said you can t go out and play but all I ask is for you to come home first and then go out to play. I get worried about you Okay so now I need your help. Can you help me with the thread?... come over here
Okay, Ill help you. Why won t you open your hand? Come here and open up your hands. I can t, there s a reason why I can t open my hand today.
Otoku continues to tell Kame how worried she was today, Kamebou keeps his fist closed but tries to help out his mother. Otoku tells Kamebou that his nose is running and to wipe his nose. When Kamebou wipes his nose he falls and the 50 sen pops out from his hand.
What happened? Something fell from your hand. 50 sen. Where did you get that money? Did someone give you a chore to do with that money? Oh! I m sorry to take time away. Go ahead and take care of what you need to do.
This money isnt for a job Then where did you get it? Did you find the money outside? Then you have to go turn it in. I didn t pick up the money.
You didnt get the money for a chore, you didn t pick up the money where did you get it from? Someone gave it to me . Someone gave it to you? Who gave it to you? A stranger.
What are you talking about? You know that a stranger is not going to give you a big sum of money like 50 sen So, who gave you the money?.. As your mother I need to go thank the person if someone gave you money. Now tell me! Who gave you the money? It s okay! I got it from a person you don t need to thank.
What are you talking about? In what world is it okay for anyone to receive money and not thank them? Now, who did you get it from. I need to personally go thank them. It was a man! A man that I don t know who he is and you don t need to go thank.
Kame, come over here I have been trying to work really hard so that people around us don t say bad things about us since we re a single parent family . I wish you would tell me how you got that money. If you tell me the truth now, I ll go and apologize with you How did you get that money? Tell me!
What are you talking about?? I didn t steal the money! I didn t pick up the money either! I received it! I got it from a stranger! Kame! Come here!! Do you see this hammer? This is the hammer we took with us when we left your father. If you don t tell me the truth, I m going to hit you with this hammer. And it s not that I m hitting you but it resembles your father scolding you.
Ouch mom! That hurts!! I didn t do anything bad to get this money, someone gave it to me!... Dad gave it to me! What did you just say right now?
I said that I got it from dad, I made a promise with dad I saw a man today calling my name and it was dad Dad s the one who said not to say anything and to keep the money a secret. You got it from your father? If that s the case why didn t you just tell me so?
Because I made a promise with dad. So, your father was he wearing a dirty kimono and drunk? No, dad quit drinking and the Yoshiwara woman.. she s gone too. He s working all the time and was wearing a clean kimono. I asked him if I could buy shoes with this 50 sen and he said it was okay.
Thats nice, you wanted new pairs of shoes. Did he say anything else? Like what? You know, did he say anything else? Like about me?
Oh you guys are say the same thing! Dad said that he feels really bad about what happened and how he was a burden to you. Dad was even apologizing to me too! Oh! and he also said that he s treating me to eel tomorrow Can I go? Sure you can go tomorrow! I m so happy for you!
