INTRODUCTION
•
To have a grasp of what religious conflict, it is imperative for students to know
what conflict. The last class covered what religion is, its nature and scope?
•
Thus, what is conflict?
Conflict can be defined as a disagreement between two parties who think they
have or actually have incompatible goals.
INTRODUCTION

Conflict can also be defined as what occurs when something is contested.
When we couple religion with conflict, we might expect that what is contested
is ideology or morality (i.e., belief).
•
Conflict occurs as a result of relationship, if there is no relationship between
two parties conflict cannot occur. Thus conflict is existent where there is a
relationship.

Religious conflict is an ever existing concept and recurrent in history and ages

Religious conflict is a term that has been variously defined by scholars.
•
Religious conflict has been categorized in several dimensions. Some are
classified as the types of religious conflict.
WHAT IS RELIGIOUS CONFLICT
Religious conflict is a term that has been variously defined by scholars. these
definitions are diverse and they all convey the single meaning of disagreement
between the two or more religious groups
Hormby (2006) defines religious conflict as a situation in which religious
adherents are involved in a serious disagreement or argument with one religious
group and another. this is a situation in which there are opposition in ideas,
opinions, feelings and wishes.
RELIGIOUS CONFLCIT
•
Religious conflict is a complex phenomenon that engages a combination of
contested domains (ideology/morality, power, personality, space/place, and
group identity), in turn enabled by a range of other conditions (political,
social, economic, cultural and psychological) – gains further clarity when we
turn to consider what religious conflict is not.

INTER-RELIGIOUS CONFLICT

Inter Religious Conflict can be defined as conducted, involving or existing
between two or more religious groups or movements.
•
In other words, most inter-religious conflicts usually develop into inter-
ethnic conflicts even where and when they started as purely religious
disagreements, for example, Muslims vs Christians etc.
•
This type of confit is usually characterized between two religious groups.
E.g. between Muslim and Christians,
INTRA- RELIGIOUS CONFLICT
•
Inter Religious Conflict can be defined as conducted, involving or existing
within a religious group or movement.
•
These are basically religious conflicts within a particular religion which are
rooted in differences resulting from religious matters,.
SECTARIAN VIOLENCE
•
In understanding what sectarian conflict, it is paramount to have an
understanding of what sectarianism is.

Sectarianism can defined as
a form of
bigotry
,
discrimination
,
or
hatred
arising from attaching relations of inferiority and superiority to
differences between subdivisions within a group. Common examples
are
denominations
of a
religion
,
ethnic identity
,
class
, or
region
for citizens of
a state and
factions
of a
political movement
.
SECTARIAN VIOLENCE

Sectarian violence and/or sectarian strife is a form of
communal
violence
inspired by
sectarianism
, that is, between different
sects
of one
particular mode of ideology or religion within a nation/community.
Religious
segregation
often plays a role in sectarian violence.
•
Examples of sectarian violence includes; the Shiites and Sunin
•
Sects like the Boko Haram Insurgent group in Nigeria.
