gates, and bars, besides very many unwalled villages.

Troubling Text:

32
Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his
people, to battle at Jahaz.
33
And the LORD our
God gave him over to us, and we defeated him
and his sons and all his people.
34
And we
captured all his cities at that time and
devoted
to destruction every city, men, women, and
children. We left no survivors.
35
Only the
livestock we took as
spoil
 for ourselves, with the
plunder of the cities that we captured.

Deuteronomy 2:32-35

“Wrestling with God”
over Deuteronomy 2 and 3

The issue:
My definition of love does not allow for the
Israelites (with the help/approval of God) killing
every man, woman and child of these two
kingdoms.

“Wrestling with God”
over Deuteronomy 2 and 3

1.
I believe this is an historical account of something that
actually happened. (not allegory)

2.
I believe God is perfect, unchanging (not an evolving
being) and all-loving towards all people.

the bible itself says clearly that this is an expression of God’s
love…

Things I affirm which make this text troubling:

17
to him who struck down great kings,

His love endures forever.
18
and killed mighty kings—

His love endures forever.
19
Sihon king of the Amorites

His love endures forever.
20
and Og king of Bashan—

His love endures forever.

Psalm 136:17-22

“Wrestling with God”
over Deuteronomy 2 and 3

Question: Can killing someone ever
be motivated by love?

(theoretical example: gunman in the church)

God’s forbearance with the Amorites:

13
Then the
Lord
 said to him (Abraham),
“Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants
will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be
enslaved and mistreated there.
14
But I will punish the nation they
serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great
possessions.
15
You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace
and be buried at a good old age.
16
In the fourth generation your
descendants will come back here, for the
sin of the Amorites has
not yet reached its full measure.”

Genesis 15:13-16

Deuteronomy 9:5
Not because of your (Israelite’s) righteousness or
uprightness of your heart are you going in to
possess their land, but
because of the wickedness
of these nations
the LORD your God is driving
them out from before you, and that he may
confirm the word that the LORD swore to your
fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

Examples of God’s judgement seeming too extreme to me:

The worldwide flood (Noah)
Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
Killing of the firstborn in Egypt
Killing of the Amorites
Killing of the Canaanites
Killing of the Israelites by Assyrian and Babylonian invasion
Killing of Jesus on the cross
Killing of humans in Revelation by plague and wars
Hell

God’s wrath against wickedness
is an expression of love.

Application: We must remind/teach each other
that every decision we make has consequences.
(we live in a consequence laden reality)
