  3. Lab Safety Rules Always wear safety googles. Never reach across a flame. Immediately notify your teacher if any chemical gets on your skin or clothing. Never look directly into a test tube when mixing or heating chemicals. Always point a test tube away from you and others when heating. Never smell a chemical directly from the container. Always waft! Never taste a chemical! Always clean up your work area and return equipment to its proper place at the end of the lab period.

  4. Lab Safety Rules Read and follow all directions exactly as written. If in doubt, ask your teacher for help! Never mix chemicals or perform tests without your teacher s permission. No horseplay in the lab!!! Keep lids on bottles and containers when not in use. Never use broken or chipped glassware. Keep your area clean and keep all materials (clothing, hairs, papers, etc.) away from a flame or heat source.

  5. Lab Safety Rules Immediately notify your teacher if you get a cut or injury when performing an experiment. Wash your hands before and after each experiment.

  6. Lab Scenarios Whats Wrong??? What s Right??? Safety Scenario #1 The teacher was not in the room yet. Jake began weighing chemicals, touching them with his hands. His nose itched, so he rubbed it. Safety Scenario #2 Same was heating a test tube. He didn t put on safety goggles since he was wearing glasses. He slanted the tube away from his work area, but towards students on the opposite side of his lab table. Safety Scenario #3 Cindy broke a test tube. Carefully she picked up the pieces with one hand and placed them in her other hand. Then she dumped the glass pieces in the trash can at the front of the room.

  7. Lab Scenarios Whats Wrong??? What s Right??? Safety Scenario #4 The cuff of Sam s long-sleeved shirt caught fire. He ran to show his teacher. Safety Scenario #5 Mike and Colleen had a lot of a chemical left from their investigation. They dumped the chemical in the sink and left the water running in the sink as they left class. Safety Scenario #6 Heather and Jen were absent the day before when the lab investigation was discussed. They gathered the materials and watched their classmates to see what to do.
