  1. I AM the Resurrection and the Life John 11:25 Teachings of Jesus 2020-21 (50)

  2. The Context Jesus is nearing the end of His earthly ministry. He teaching and all other factors have intensified. Because his time is drawing nearer, the raising of Lazarus is part of the culmination of His works leading up to His entry into Jerusalem.

  3. The Context Vs. 1-3 Lazarus is sick in Bethany, and they send for Jesus Vs. 4-6 Jesus delays, declaring the purpose behind what is about to happen Vs. 7-10 - Jesus prepares to go to Judea (Bethany) though the disciples are concerned (He still has work to do) Vs. 11-15 Jesus speaks of Lazarus speaking and needing to be awaken (then Jesus says He is dead)

  4. The Context Vs. 16-18 They head for Bethany, the disciples willing to go, even in death Vs. 19-24 Martha hears Jesus is there and goes to Him. She is told Lazarus will rise again. Vs. 25-26 Jesus declares, I AM the resurrection and the life Vs. 27-28 Marth believes (though she does not fully understand) and calls for Mary

  5. The Context Vs. 29-35 Mary goes to Jesus weeping, Jesus wept. One of 3 times we read of His weeping (Luke 19:41, Hebrews 5:7 (Lk. 22:41-44)) Vs. 36-37 Seeing Jesus weeping, the crowds have mixed reactions Vs. 38-44 Jesus raises Lazarus Vs. 45-46 Some therefore believe in Jesus, but others to and tell the Pharisees

  6. The Context Vs. 47ff The corrupt leaders determine that they need to kill Jesus (and later Lazarus 12:10- 11)

  7. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? Our focus in this account is the BOLD declaration of Jesus, I AM the resurrection and the life Clearly, Jesus intends to instill in His disciples that He will arise the third day. What He is about to do is only a precursor. - Continually Jesus tried to emphasize He would be raised Matthew 16:21, 17:23, 20:17-19, etc. - After He arose, they finally understood. This became their message cf. Acts 2:23-24

  8. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? We could devote considerable time presenting evidence for the resurrection of Jesus, and that is clearly beneficial. The evidence for His resurrection, as recorded in scripture, is substantial and enough to be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that He DID arise from the dead. BUT, that is not the emphasis of what Jesus is declaring here. What does His resurrection mean for us?

  9. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? Jesus is declaring His power, even over death and Satan Notice His declaration, He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live (Jn. 11:35b) Death is the dominion of Satan Hebrews 2:14 Romans 6:23, the wages of sin is death (both physical and spiritual cf. Romans 5:12, Gen. 2:17)

  10. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? Jesus is declaring His power, even over death and Satan We have been delivered from death through Jesus 1 Corinthians 15:54-57

  11. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? Jesus is declaring He is our hope of resurrection from the wages of sin The resurrection of Jesus is manifest not only physically, but spiritually over the wages of sin - Romans 6:23 Unless one is delivered from his sin, he will die spiritually, and eventually physically unprepared He will face the fate of Satan (Revelation 20:10, 14-15, Matthew 25:41, etc.)

  12. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? Jesus is declaring He is our hope of resurrection from the wages of sin When we obey the gospel, the death and resurrection of Jesus removes our sins - Colossians 2:12-13, cf. Romans 6:3-5

  13. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? How is Jesus the life? He is the giver of life. - He was there when the world began (Colossians 1:16, John 1:3-4) - He can bring back to life that which has died (cf. Lk. 7:11-18, 8:40-42, ) -When He raises us, NONE can defeat us see John 11:26, Romans 6:8-9, death no longer has dominion

  14. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? How is Jesus the life? In raising Lazarus, Jesus was proving that even death could not keep Him from accomplishing His purpose for Himself AND us! How often has Jesus emphasized He came that we might have life? John 1:4, 6:35 - the bread of life, 8:12 - the light of life in Him, 10:10, He came that we might have life abundantly, etc.

  15. How is Jesus the Resurrection and Life? In this declaration, Jesus proved His power (both authority and ability) to be our resurrection

  16. Lesson: Are we living with hope of the resurrection? How can we have hope that we will be raised after this life? IF we give up so much, how do we know it is not in vain? Because Jesus arose, and He raised Lazarus to further prove that He can do this.

  17. Lesson: Are we living with hope of the resurrection? How can we have hope that we will be raised after this life? Just as Jesus arose from the dead, so will we! Romans 8:11 1 Corinthians 15:12-19, 22 Philippians 3:9-11 Acts 24:15, Paul boldly declared this before Felix

  18. Lesson: Are we living with hope of the resurrection? In conclusion: See Colossians 3:1-4, in obeying the gospel, we have been raised with Christ and now we hope for a physical resurrection that will culminate in an eternity with Him. We need to live it! See 1 John 3:1-3

  19. What does Jesus, the resurrection and life, mean to you?
