FACILITIES HVAC Concerns (Cafeteria, Kitchen, Rooms 112, 113, 114, 115, 11, 12, 23, 22, Library and 25, Gym---these areas have consumed 90% of our maintenance requests and affect the entire population of our school. While Mr. Caton and Southern Air have been diligent in working out the issues, it is a LONG-STANDING concern and has been the #1 facility request for years. With a fifty year old building and the theft of all of our HVAC units in February 2012, it has been a longstanding and complicated issue )
CHALLENGES Substitute/Teacher Shortages Consistent Math and Reading Intervention programs/supports in the County School to Special Education Department communication pipeline
REQUESTSFOR SUPPORT 1. Academic: Consistent conceptual math curriculum and intervention program in the County Other: Continuing with assigned substitute program at our schools 2.
PRIDE We are proud of our evolution as a staff and school, in terms of our trauma-informed practices, our relationship building within our community and classrooms and the strong communication links between our caregivers and our school. We consider our team a strong and unified one. We emphasize a strong growth mindset among our students and staff and believe that this has been a key to surviving and thriving during the last year. Our school has received many grants in the last year (from Donor s Choose, the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF) and the TAC Teaching Arts Creatively group) which is directly impacting the library, music and various student art installations around the building. We finally have our STEAM lab up and running! SJES parent and WV Extension Agent, Mrs. Johnson has led STEAM lessons throughout the year and assisted us with making our dream a reality. Our school had the highest number of participants in the Orton Gillingham training this year. Our PTO has sustained us through this pandemic and has been extremely supportive. Our Instructional Coach, Tracey Brinson, has facilitated and supported every aspect of CANVAS with our staff. Our use of technology, as a school, has increased dramatically. We held Spirit Days throughout our virtual learning and our students remained connected to us. We raised over $15,000 with our first Read-A-Thon. Our library checkouts are up 25% and over 300 new books have been purchased for our library. Because we deem the library as the heart of our school, we are excited about our new media specialist (Mrs. Moody) and her enthusiastic revitalization of the space.
