Impact of Recent Violence on Education Infrastructure in Kwazulu-Natal

The recent violence in Kwazulu-Natal has severely impacted the education infrastructure, with a total of 137 institutions being damaged and looted. This includes schools, education circuit management centre offices, and education support centres. The extent of damage varies from looting to infrastructure being burnt, affecting multiple districts in the region. Efforts are underway to assess the costs and plan for replacements to restore the educational facilities.

  2. EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTRES EDUCATION SUPPORT CENTRES A total of 137 institutions were damaged and looted. Eight are Education Circuit Management Centre Offices. Three are Education Support Centres. One hundred and twenty-seven (126) are schools. In all these establishments the cost of damage in rands and cents is still to be estimated by inspectors A costed damage report will be available on Friday 23 July 2021 at mid- day. The matter was reported on 13 July 2021. BAQAQE PRIMARY 13/07/2021 - Part of the school fence was destroyed as the community members were burning the Simamisa Sugar Cane fields in the area. EMASUNDWINI PRIMARY On 14 July 2021 there was burglary in the school. Food was stolen. Matters referred to the SAPS for investigation. EZIMAMBENI PRIMARY HABENI PRIMARY SCHOOL Burglary to 2 store rooms. Nothing was stolen only vandalism Principal's office vandalized, door burglar guard taken out, food items taken and 4 big speakers. The case reported to the police today, 14th July 2021. KANGIKHO PRIMARY On 14 July 2021 there was burglary in the school. Food & a safe were stolen. Matters were referred to the SAPS for investigation. MBONOMUHLE PRIMARY Kitchen stove was stolen, 9 Computers were stolen, TV set 32 inch was stolen, Brush- cutter, Learners Nutrition grocery was looted IZIBUKO SECONDARY KWAMASOSHA SECONDARY Looting - Attempted burglary. AVAILABILITY OF CLASSROOMS AVAILABILITY OF CLASSROOMS The structural damages in the majority of schools is manageable (includes broken windows, doors etc. Out of 126 schools, three schools had a serious shortage of classrooms resulting from the current devastation In Pinetown district SIPHOSETHU PRIMARY suffered a loss of 3 classrooms In UMgungundlovu district SIKHULULIWE suffered a loss of 8 classrooms At ILembe district RADHA ROOPSINGH suffered a loss of 7 classrooms The province has procured 18 mobile classrooms for distribution the three schools Deliveries started on Friday (23 July 2021) and will be completed over the weekend and learners will be accomodated 23 GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER

NSNP NSNP STOVES STOVES Some of the schools in districts have reported a loss of stoves used for preparation of food for learners The Department of Education will be embarking on a special procurement for 20 stoves for distribution on Friday and over the weekend These stoves will be used to replace the stolen and damaged stoves in schools for feeding to continue On Monday each feeding schools will open with a Monitor who will confirm that feeding is taking place This will allow the province to compile a report on the status of School feeding in schools The schools will further indicate other challenges that they may be facing as we open 25 GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER
