GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER SOCIO ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES AND PROJECTS The Department has intensified socio-economic participation of women aimed at addressing poverty, unemployment and inequalities. These are in identified municipalities through: Implementing high impact project through Skills Development programmes and resuscitation of Flagship Projects for sustainable livelihood Provision of Life skill and Technical skill development such as sawing, art and craft, crop farming, bakery, construction Legal Rights awareness workshops targeting women Women Dialogue and advocacy campaigns. Advocay programmes on Women s Health and Sexual Reproductive rights. 311

GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AND PROJECTS The DSD provide skills development at Youth Centres and Youth Development Academies Promote youth s self-empowerment to develop their full potential and self-esteem through life-skills development programmes; Improve youth socio-economic status through involvement in skills development and socio-economic programmes; Therefore, Youth Development Programmes are drawn on the following pillars: Youth and Skills development; Youth Empowerment through capacity development; Youth mobilization; and Youth and Economic participation. 511

GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER COMMUNITY NUTRITION AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRES CNDCs are aimed at provision of nutritious balanced meals to vulnerable communities that leave below the poverty line The programme further provide communities with an opportunity to learn about socio economic empowerment skills and programmes The CNDC are run by Women led NPOs within communities What is Offered: Community Mobilization to build safe and sustainable communities through the creation of strong community networks Community Based Research and Planning: Community-led programming to facilitate interventions for community development services and programmes (Household Profiling & analysis) Poverty Alleviation: Provision of food to vulnerable individuals and households in the community nutrition and development centres 711

GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER VICTIM EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMMES SHELTERS FOR ABUSED WOMEN AND MEN A Shelter is a safe space for women and men where they may remain between one day and up to a maximum of 6 months to allow them to undergo a therapeutic healing process and receive psycho- social support services from a professional Social Worker. The following services are provided at the Shelter:- Referral to other helping resources Skills development and income generation Family reunification Support groups Spirituality HIV/Aids Counselling and promotion of a healthy lifestyle Rehabilitation of victims of Gender Based Violence 911

GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER WHITE DOOR CENTRES OF HOPE A white door is a site that operates as a localized reception-assessment-referral (RAR) site and is located in or as close to the community as possible. It functions as a short term safe space that victims can access if they need to wait for professional services, including the police. Services offered:- A safe secure environment. Basic emotional containment. Referral to the closest professional victim s service site. Basic care items, such as a blanket, refreshments and clothing. 11

GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER PARENTING PROGRAMMES The department renders parenting programmes aimed at fathers, mothers and other caregivers The aim is to increase parents confidence and caregiving skills that promote communication between couples and their children within families Furthemore, to help parent with positive communication and to overcome their fears and discomfort in discussing sex and sexuality with their adolescents These include the following: Let s Talk Parenting Programme Sinovuyo Parenting Programme Families Matter Parenting Programme Men Care programme 1311
GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER WOMEN FOCUSED HIV AND AIDS PROGRAMMES Social and Behaviour Change Programme (You Only Live Once YOLO) which is a programme focusing on empowering adolescents and youth and to make informed decisions about their lives Community Based Prevention and Early Intervention Programme (Isibindi Model) Provision of early identification, prevention and protection of children and youth at risk (Orphaned and Vulnerable Children and Youth) 1411
GROWING KWAZULU-NATAL TOGETHER SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AND REHABILITATION PROGRAMME The Department has provision of Substance Abuse Prevention Programmes such as Kemoja, Wake Up Call, GROW These programmes render therapeutic counselling and support services to individuals Assessment of individuals for Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Programme. Provision of Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment Services to individuals dependent on substances The Province has three State Rehabilitation Centres, five funded inpatient treatment centres and twelve registered Private Treatment Centres and Private Half Way Houses for individuals addicted to substances. There are eight (8) Temporary safe care centres and (64) Child and Youth Care Centres for children who have been abused, neglected and exploited where specialized services are rendered for recovery and healing of children. 15
