1. 16,800 estimated saving from reduction in length of stay due to decision based upon summarised evidence supplied by a librarian. An immunocompromised patient with symptoms of fever was found to have an infection. The librarian undertook a literature search to inform treatment resulting in the selection of an appropriate antibiotic therapy. The patient s therapy was changed . reducing the length of stay by approximately four weeks. This represents an estimated saving of 16,800. 2. Librarian alerts clinician to innovative treatment leading to effective cure. The librarian undertook a literature search to inform the treatment of a patient suffering a chylous effusion which required draining 2 litres a day over 6 months. The patient was ill and weak and such cases often result in death. A paper reporting the use of somatostatin to cure cats and dogs with chylous effusion prompted the clinician to adapt this treatment for use in humans. The treatment was successful and led to a cure within 5 days. 4. 303 hours of a Senior Midwifes time is released by using the expertise of a Clinical Librarian. A clinical librarian ensured comprehensive and efficient evidence provision for the large number of maternity guidelines. The collaborative work between maternity staff, governance staff, and the librarian resulted in 55 updates to midwifery policies and guidelines which resulted in saving 302.5 hours of the midwife s time - a saving of 12,397. Librarian input essential to achieve 1.9 million of savings As a member of the Product Selection Committee the clinical librarian provides evidence to support decisions about purchasing clinical products. The evidence ensures that quality, safety and patient experience are considered as well as identifying time and cost efficiencies. These evidenced-informed decisions have led to cost savings of 1.9 million between 2015 and 2016. The clinical librarian is an essential part of this. 6. Change in practice leading to 2 week reduction in waiting times from using summarised best practice from a Specialist Librarian.. The health librarian provided evidence showing how Did Not Attend rates had been reduced across a range of services in other organisations. This has led to a change in practice resulting in a 2% reduction in local Did Not Attend rates and a reduction in waiting times to 2 weeks. Librarians have the expertise to collate, summarise, and send the information to me in a usable format which makes it so much easier for me to put into practice. Cost savings and reduction in risk by changing practice informed by evidence provided by a specialist librarian The librarian undertook an evidence search which confirmed that supplementary prescribing by physiotherapists has substantial benefits to patients. The work has led to both reduced risk and cost savings for the service as well as potential for wider practice change. Massive saving of clinical time and this is of direct patient benefit. 9. 48,500 saving and improved patient experience by implementing a change based upon evidence supplied by the specialist librarian. The clinical librarian provided evidence about a Diabetes Nurse Specialist Outreach Service. This model involves the healthcare professional visiting offenders in prison rather than requiring them to visit the hospital and avoids issues surrounding security and distress. Implementation has reduced the number of missed appointments - a saving of around 48,500. Ultimately, the service now provides improved patient care for offenders. 10. Low-cost intervention leading to reduced length of stay for critically ill patients informed by evidence provided by a specialist librarian. The health librarian conducted a search and brought evidence leading to a change in protocol around routine testing and supplementation with Vitamin D for patients in acute care. This led to improved care, reduced lengths of stay and subsequently improving efficiency. The cost of testing and supplementation is relatively low but impact in terms of speed of recovery and reduced length of stay is significant.
