  4. OPTIONS IN HEALTH CARE FOR ESL STUDENTS. Home Health Aide. Nursing Assistant Program. ESOL Certificate. 2-credit certificate in HWPS and one ESL support class to become a certified Home Health Aide. One semester six-credit program to become eligible to take the NM Certified Nursing Assistant Exam and ESL support classes. One semester full-time or 2 to 3 semesters part-time to earn a 16 credit certificate to better prepare for other health career options at CNM including Community Health Worker and Specialist. Get foundation of Patient Care Attendant and certificate in HHA. Enter into the NA program. Work for an HHA agency in the client s home. Certified Nursing Assistants have immediate employment opportunities and can enter the Patient Care Technician program. Meets English pre-requisites for HWPS programs.

  6. HOME HEALTH AIDE PROGRAM

  7. DESCRIPTION OF A HOME HEALTH AIDE This program prepares students at two levels: 1. Foundational training for Personal Care Attendants. 2. More advanced training for Home Health Aides. Completion of the program meets or exceeds the New Mexico Department of Health requirements for each level of training.

  8. HOME HEALTH AIDE ESL OPTION. Work in a client s home to provide care and monitor clients. An agency Home Health Aide works under the supervision of an appropriately licensed professional such as a registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech language pathologist. Duties may include: Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding and toileting. Cooking and light housekeeping. Taking vital signs and observing, reporting and documenting client status. Requirements: ESL CASAS Level 215-235 and pass an oral interview.

  9. HOME HEALTH AIDE SPRING 2016. HHA: January 30 to April 30, 2016. (No HHA Week of March 13). ESL: January 16 to April 30 (entire semester). TUESDAY. THURSDAY. ESL 12:15pm to 3:00pm. HOME HEALTH AIDE. 8:30am to 3:45pm. (Lunch break hour). You will take two HHA courses in one semester and an ESL support class. Part 1 HHA 1090 - Home Health Aide Foundation Skills: Personal Care Attendant 1 credit. Part 2 HHA 1190 - Home Health Aide Advanced Skills 1 credit hour(s). ESL for Home Health Aide IBHH 500: Focuses on English communication skills needed for HHAs and provides assistance with HHA class content.

  10. HOME HEALTH AIDE. When you finish the program: You will receive a CNM certificate in both Personal Care Attendant and Home Health Aide. You may work for a Home Health Care Agency or find employment on your own. Average pay ranges from about $9 to 10. You may continue on and enroll in the Nursing Assistant program.

  11. COST: ABOUT $211. This includes: Tuition: (2 credit hours x $32) $64. (In District, New Mexico Resident). (2 credit hours x $52) $104. (Out of District or Non-New Mexico Resident). Program Fee: $5. Registration Fee: $40. Technology Fee: $12. ESL Fee: $10. Books: $80 or less depending on new, used or rented. Total = $211 (resident) or $251 (out of district or non-resident.) You may set up an installment plan by paying $50 when you register.

  12. CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT PROGRAM

  13. WHAT DO CNAs AND HOME HEALTH AIDES DO? Take temperatures, blood pressure, and other vital signs. Report and record patient symptoms, progress, and complaints. Transfer patients and position them in bed. Assist with walking, feeding, dressing, and bathing. Empty bedpans and help patients use the toilet. Change soiled linens and make the beds. Apply compresses and give massages. Work with a team to make residents feel comfortable, respected, and safe.

  14. IS THIS FOR YOU? Do you have time to attend all classes? Can you be on your feet all day? Do you feel comfortable touching other people? Can you work with body fluids such as blood, urine, pus, vomit, and feces? Do you like helping other people? Can you remain calm under pressure? Do you like to work in a team?

  15. ESL SUPPORT PRACTICE ENGLISH YOU NEED IN HEALTH CARE. Speak in English with patients and the health care team. Use English listening skills to understand directions, orders, and information. Learn medical vocabulary and abbreviations. Report resident progress in English. Review English grammar to sound more professional at work. Read and review CNA procedures, textbook chapters, and study materials. Get help preparing for CNA tests and exams. Create a resume and practice preparing for job interviews.

  16. REQUIREMENTS CASAS exam score of 225 to 235 and oral interview. If accepted, take Accuplacer (SSC Testing Center). Register for class. Take CPR at a community location. Pass your background check (felonies). Get required immunizations. Pass your drug test.

  17. NA SCHEDULE SPRING 2016. TABLE: First 12 Weeks. January 17 to April 9. Monday. ESL: 2:45pm to 6:35pm. Wednesday. Nursing Assistant: 3:00pm to 8:45pm. Friday. Nursing Assistant: 3:00pm to 8:45pm. TABLE: Last 3 Weeks. April 10 to April 30. Monday. ESL: 2:45pm to 6:35pm. Wednesday. Clinical Practice: 1:30pm to 8:45pm. Friday. Clinical Practice: 1:30pm to 8:45pm.

  18. COST DETAILS. Tuition: 6 credits ($32 x 6)= $192. (In District, New Mexico Residents). 6 credits ($52 x 6)= $312. (Out of District or Non-Residents). $225. Drug test and background check. Stethoscope, gait belt, badge holder. 2 sets scrub suits (top and bottom). Technology Fee: $36. Registration Fee: $40. CPR BLS for Health Care: $50. Textbook: $70 new. (Used or rental are cheaper.) White Shoes, Watch: $25. State CNA Test (end of term): $104 Total = $742 (resident) or $862 (non-resident.) Program Fee:

  19. HOW CAN I PAY? Some Possibilities: Payment Plan. Advantage Scholarship. Book Scholarships. FAFSA (Federal financial aid). If you are a legal resident and wish to use this class as a prerequisite for Patient Care Technician you may be eligible for FAFSA funding. Check with a CNM Connect Academic Advisor to see if you meet all the legal residency requirements and declare PCT as your major before you register for NA.   20. WHEN YOU FINISH THIS CLASS. You will take the state exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). After you pass: Work as a nursing assistant or home health care aide. Work in hospitals, long-term care facilities (nursing homes) and rehabilitation centers, or in clients homes or Study more advanced health career careers such as Patient Care Technician or Nursing. You must check the requirements and take the prerequisites first.

  21. NEXT STEPS TO REGISTER. 1. Take the CASAS exam: You will be contacted with your results. 2. Go to oral interview. We will notify you if you are accepted. 3. Complete CPR (BLS) for Health Care Providers before the class begins. (The Achievement Coaches have a list of places that offer this 1-day class.) 4. Complete immunizations and make a copy of the records. (You will get a list of the required vaccinations.) 5. Register for this class and pay within 24 hours of registering. (We will help you register if you don t know how.)

  22. ESOL CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE IN HEALTH CARE

  23. What is the Certificate of Communication & Culture in Health Care? Courses offered by the School of Adult and General Education (SAGE) and Health, Wellness, and Public Safety (HWPS). 16 credit hours: 13 credits of ESOL. 3 credits: Introduction to Community Health Care. Program goals: Improving participants English language skills. Increasing participants knowledge of the U.S. health care system.

  24. What do you do in the Certificate Program? Academic and Workplace Communication Develop listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills for health care. Reading and Vocabulary Apply reading strategies to health care texts, documents, and materials, and build your vocabulary. English Composition and Grammar Practice writing and analyze grammar in the context of the health care industry. U.S. Culture and Contemporary Issues Learn about U.S. cultural norms, behaviors, and expectations in the health care industry. Introduction to Community Health Worker Get an overview of current health care delivery systems and organization structure.

  25. Who is eligible? Requirements: CASAS reading score of 236+ and and Accuplacer score: minimum of 125 (Reading & Sentence Skills combined). In other words, students must test into or be eligible for IRW 0980/ESOL 0981. Recommended: Background in health care in your native country.

  26. Schedule for Spring. TABLE: Note: All classes begin the week of January 17. Course Number. Course Title. Schedule. Academic & Workplace Communication Health. M/W. 9:00am to 10:15am. ESOL 1001. ESOL 1010. Reading & Vocabulary Health. T/R. 7:30am to 8:45am. ESOL 1020. English Composition & Grammar Health. M/W. 3:30pm to 5:15pm. ESOL 1030. U.S. Culture & Contemporary Issues Health. M/W. 6:00pm to 7:15pm. HLTH 1030. Intro to Community Health Care. Online.

  27. Registration Process. Make an appointment to take the CASAS test in SSC 110. After you get the CASAS test results, talk to Lori Gallegos in SSC 110. If your CASAS score is over 236, you can do the following: Complete an admissions application online at link: Central New Mexico Community College Web site. Take the Accuplacer test. Log into MyCNM and take a new student orientation online. Register online for the course(s) through MyCNM. Pay for courses within 24 hours. Get a CNM ID card in the SSC. Bring your schedule. Talk to Achievement Coach Lori Gallegos in SAGE or Achievement Coach Nicki Purkeypile in HWPS at any time to get help with this process.

  28. Program Costs. Tuition: Full-time (12 to 18 credit hours): New Mexico residents in district: approximately $384. New Mexico residents out of district: approximately $624. Non-New Mexico residents: approximately $3,312. Part-time (1 to 11 credit hours): New Mexico residents in district: approximately $32/credit hour. New Mexico residents out of district: $52/credit hour for 1 to 6 credits (up to 2 classes). Tuition: Fees: $40 registration fee. $6 technology fee per credit hour.

  29. Cost. Books: ESOL 1001, 1020, and 1030: Textbooks will be provided or recommended. ESOL 1010: Textbook costs = $31.25 to $41.40 in the bookstore. HLTH 1030: $33.16 to $94.75 (renting or buying). The cost of the ESOL classes depends on how many classes you take and whether you are an in-district or out-of-district New Mexico resident.
