Grow Your Own Teachers Scholarship Purpose: The Grow You Own Teachers Act seeks to provide opportunities for educational assistants to pursue careers in teaching in New Mexico by providing scholarship opportunities for educational assistants to attend a public post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico to earn a bachelor s degree in education. The program provides for professional leave and scholarship awards to qualified educational assistants. The scholarship is intended to help defray the educational expenses charged by the institution including tuition, fees, books and course supplies. Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of New Mexico as defined in 5.7.18.9 NMAC; Accepted into an accredited Public Education Department approved teacher preparation program at an eligible institution; Has not earned appropriate educational credentials to be licensed as a teacher by the Public Education Department; Has demonstrated financial need as verified by the financial aid officer through the student s FAFSA; and Is in good employment standing with the New Mexico public school.   6. Grow Your Own Teachers Continued Award: The amount of the scholarship award to the recipient shall be based on financial need not exceed $6,000 per year. Maximum length: 5 academic years. Scholarship shall continue while the recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress at an eligible educational institution. Duration: Other Info. Participants must have been employed as an educational assistant for a minimum of 2 years and must be in good standing with their current employer. School administrators shall grant leave to educational assistants to complete their licensure program. Institutions that under-expend their allocation should notify NMHED as soon as possible. Institutions that generate a waiting list due to expending all allocated should also notify NMHED so that redistribution can occur the following semester.

Teacher Preparation Affordability Scholarship Purpose: To increase the number of teachers in designated high-need teacher positions through scholarships for students enrolled in educator preparation programs. The scholarship pays up to $6,000 per year and is stackable with other forms of financial aid. Institutions shall give preference to students who: (1) are English language learners whose first or heritage language was not English; (2) are historically underrepresented minorities in New Mexico s teaching profession; or (3) have declared intent to teach in a high-need teacher position as defined by the public education department Enrolled at least half-time in an accredited PED-approved teacher preparation program at a public postsecondary institution or tribal college Has not yet earned educational credentials to be licensed as a teacher Demonstrates financial need Eligibility Requirements:

(N.M. 2019). 5.7.35 NMAC Teacher Preparation Affordability Scholarship. The new proposed rule establishes regulations by H.B.275, 54th Leg., 1st Sess. (N.M. 2019).   12. College Affordability Grant Update Description: Accessible to New Mexico students with financial need who do not qualify for other state grants and scholarships. New Mexico resident Enrolled at least half time as an undergraduate student at a New Mexico public college or university or tribal college Demonstrated financial need as determined by the eligible college or university Has completed a high school diploma or a high school equivalency credential New for AY20: Maximum of $1,500 per semester depending on financial need The grant is for a period of one year and may be renewed on an annual basis or until the student graduates with a bachelor s degree from an eligible institution. Legislative Lottery Scholarship Update Tribal College Students now eligible for scholarship (Laws 2019, Chapter 54) AY20 award levels similar to AY19: $2,291 per semester for Research Institutions; $1,558 per semester at Comprehensive and Tribal Colleges; $580 per semester at Community Colleges. 5.7.20 NMAC updates clarify tribal college eligibility and allow for part time enrollment within the 16 month gap year with certain restrictions.

New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship Description: The Legislative Lottery Scholarship can pay all or a portion of tuition (up to an undergraduate degree) for students who meet the eligibility criteria. Student Eligibility: Student must be a resident of New Mexico. Student must have completed high school at a public or accredited private New Mexico high school, graduated from a public or accredited private new Mexico high school or received a high school equivalency credential while maintaining residency in New Mexico. Student must enroll full-time at a public post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico within sixteen months of graduation or receipt of a high equivalency credential and maintain continuous full-time enrollment. First time enrollment within the sixteen month period following graduation must be at a New Mexico public post-secondary educational institution. If the student enrolls full-time at ANY out of state institution or private in-state institution the student shall forfeit eligibility. Student must enroll in and earn 15 credit hours per semester at a four-year New Mexico public university. Student must enroll in and earn 12 credit hours per semester at a two- year New Mexico public community college. Student must maintain a 2.5 or greater cumulative grade point average (GPA) each semester of enrollment. Students with disabilities may qualify for reduced credit hour requirements and additional semesters of the scholarship.

  19. New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship continued Duration: The initial scholarship shall begin with the second semester of enrollment at a public postsecondary educational institution. Thereafter, the scholarship is renewed on a per- semester basis subject to maintaining eligibility. Students must remain consecutively enrolled each fall and spring semester to maintain eligibility for the scholarship. The scholarship may be renewed at a four-year institution until the award recipient has received seven (7) semesters of scholarship awards or until the student graduates with a bachelor s degree, whichever is sooner. Students attending a community college are eligible for three (3) semesters of scholarship awards. The student should contact their public post-secondary educational institution s financial aid advisor for eligibility verification if they have met the first semester eligibility requirements listed above. Application Dates and Process: Student shall contact their public post-secondary institution s financial aid advisor for eligibility verification (no application needed). Award: A flat award based on the type of institution the student attends (Research; Comprehensive; or Community College). NMHED will notify institutions of the award for the upcoming academic year by June 1.

Does the Lottery Scholarship cover the entire cost of tuition? The amount of tuition covered by the scholarship will vary by institution. Is a student eligible to apply for other types of financial aid if I receive the Lottery Scholarship? Yes, a student may be eligible for other financial aid programs. The Financial Aid Division encourages all students to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at http://fafsa.gov/ Does the Lottery Scholarship cover other expenses such as student fees, books, or room and board? No, the Lottery Scholarship applies only to tuition costs. How soon must a student enroll after completing high school to establish eligibility for the New Mexico Legislative Lottery Scholarship? Student must enroll full-time at a public post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico within sixteen months of graduation or receipt of a high equivalency credential and maintain continuous full-time enrollment. Full-time for purposes of Lottery Scholarship eligibility is 15 credit hours per semester at a four-year New Mexico public university and 12 credit hours per semester at a two-year New Mexico public community college. What are the provisions for students that begin service in the military following completion of high school? Students that enter the military within four months of high school completion may establish eligibility within sixteen months of completion of honorable service or medical discharge. Can the scholarship be transferred to an out of state institution or private institution in New Mexico? No, the scholarship may only be received at a public post-secondary educational institution within New Mexico. If a student attends a non-qualifying institution after completing high school will they forfeit eligibility for this program? Yes, to establish eligibility for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship first attendance must be at a qualifying New Mexico public post secondary educational institution.

  22. Work Study Description: Provides funding for employment opportunities for qualified resident students attending eligible public colleges or universities. U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien New Mexico Resident (12 consecutive months) Undergraduate or Graduate Enroll at least half-time during regular session Enroll at least 3 credit hours during summer session Demonstrate financial need (FAFSA must be completed) Public New Mexico colleges and universities, Crownpoint Institute of Technology, Dine College, Institute of American Indian Art, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, St. John s College and University of the Southwest.   23. Foster Care System Student Tuition Waiver Description: Tuition and fee waiver for eligible students attending public post-secondary institutions within the state. Institutions shall not charge tuition or fees to qualified students. There are no reimbursements from the New Mexico Higher Education Department. Student(s) who are in legal custody of Children Youth and Family Department (CYFD) or a New Mexico tribal entity on the day preceding the student(s) eighteenth birthday; or after the day of the student(s) fourteenth birthday and the student sparents custody rights were relinquished or terminated at the time; or on the day the student graduated from a high school in the state or received a high school equivalency certificate in New Mexico. A certification letter will be provided by the eligible student(s) from the Children Youth and Family Department (CYFD) or their tribal authority (in such cases). A unique number identifier will be included in certification letter.

  24. Military War Veterans Scholarship Description: Program funds apply to tuition, required student fees and books for eligible students attending New Mexico public-post secondary institutions This scholarship is available to veterans who have been residents of New Mexico for a minimum of ten years and who were awarded the Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal or any other medal issued for service in the Armed Forces of the United States in support of any US Military campaign or armed conflict as defined by congress or presidential executive order for service after August 1, 1990. Applicant must provide a certified copy of their DD214 showing a Combat Campaign or Service Medal and an honorable discharge. Tuition, required student fees and book costs for undergraduate and master s degree work. Applications will be approved on a first come, first served basis. Vietnam Veterans Scholarship Description: A state scholarship for resident undergraduate and graduate students that provides tuition, fees, and book allowances to Vietnam Veterans certified by the New Mexico Veterans Service Commission (NMDVS). Resident of New Mexico Vietnam Veteran as reviewed and certified by the NMDVS Honorably discharged from the armed forces of the United States, who was a resident of New Mexico at original time of entry into the armed forces or who has lived in New Mexico for 10 years or more Been awarded the Vietnam campaign medal for services in the armed forces of this country in Vietnam during the period of August 5, 1964 to the official termination of the Vietnam conflict as designated by executive order of the President of the United States, is eligible for certification Tuition, required fees, and required books.   26. Graduate Scholarship Description: Created to increase graduate enrollment at public postsecondary institutions for students from groups underrepresented in graduate education. Priority will be given to NM students from those groups with the most severe under-representation and students with the greatest financial need. A citizen of the United States or permanent resident Must agree to serve in an unpaid internship or assistantship at the eligible institution, a government agency or private industry approved by his major department for ten hours per week during the academic year Eligible according to a standard needs analysis or financial aid officer s professional judgment Up to $7,200 per year One academic year (a recipient who remains in good academic standing in their course of study, as determined by the institution, may receive the scholarship for a total of two years for master s degree program students). Firefighter and Peace Officer Survivors Scholarship Description: A state scholarship that recognizes the importance of the duties performed by our fire fighters and peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Eligible dependents include the spouse or adopted or natural children that were twenty one years of age or under at the time of death Student and honorable deceased must be a resident of New Mexico Student must attend a public post-secondary institution within New Mexico Tuition Each scholarship is for a period of up to five academic years. Student Incentive Grant Description: NM Student Incentive Grant is for resident undergraduate students with substantial financial need who are attending a New Mexico public college or university or tribal college. New Mexico Resident Enrolled at least half time as an undergraduate student at a New Mexico public college or university or tribal college Demonstrated financial need as determined by the eligible college or university Has completed a high school diploma or a high school equivalency credential $200 - $2,500 per year The grant is for a period of one year and may be renewed on an annual basis or until the student graduates with a bachelor s degree from an eligible institution. Health Professions Student Loan-For-Service Programs (Allied, Medical and Nursing) The objective and purpose of the New Mexico Health Professions Student Loan-For-Service acts are to increase the number of health professional in the areas of the state which have experienced shortages of health practitioners, by making educational loans to students seeking certification/licensure in an eligible health profession. As a condition of each loan, the student shall declare their intent to practice as a health professional in a designated shortage area within the state of New Mexico. For every year of service provided in a designated shortage area within New Mexico, a portion of the loan will be forgiven. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100% of the loan is eligible for forgiveness. Penalties will be assessed if the service agreement is not satisfied. Medical Loan-For-Service Purpose: To increase the number of physicians in areas of the state which have experienced a shortage of health professionals by making educational loans to students entering medical school. At least half-time enrollment in a University School of Medicine program. Enrollment Requirements: Award Amount: Based on financial need of the student and may not exceed $25,000.00 per year. The award is for a period of one year but may be renewable for up for four years upon resubmission of an application each year. May 15th thru July 1st Duration: Application Dates:

Allied Health Loan-For-Service Purpose: To increase the number of allied health providers in areas of the state which have experienced shortages of health practitioners, by making educational loans to students seeking certification/licensure in an eligible health field. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Pharmacy, Respiratory Care, Laboratory Technology, Mental Health-Social Services, Emergency Medical Services, Nutrition and Dental Hygiene. At least half-time enrollment in an undergraduate of graduate degree program at a New Mexico public post-secondary educational institution. Based on financial need of the student and may not exceed $12,000.00 per year. The award is for a period of one year but may be renewable for up for four years upon resubmission of an application each year. Nursing Loan-For-Service Purpose: To increase the number of nurses in areas of the state which have experienced nurse shortages by making educational loans to students entering nursing programs. At least half-time enrollment in an undergraduate of graduate degree nursing program at a New Mexico public post-secondary educational institution. Based on financial need of the student and may not exceed $12,000.00 per year. The award is for a period of one year but may be renewable for up for four years upon resubmission of an application each year. Teacher Loan-For-Service Purpose: Proactively addresses New Mexico s teacher shortage by providing students with the financial resources to complete or enhance their post-secondary teacher preparation education. Students must declare their intent to practice as a teacher in a designated shortage area within the state of New Mexico following the completion of their program. If the entire service agreement is fulfilled, 100% of the loan is eligible for forgiveness.
