EXPECT THE HIGHEST STANDARD A SCHOLARLY BOOK PUBLISHED (OR ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION) WITH A RESPECTED, PEER-REVIEWED UNIVERSITY PRESS, PLUS A FEW ADDITIONAL PEER- REVIEWED OR INVITED PUBLICATIONS, OR A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN RESPECTED, PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS AND INVITED PUBLICATIONS, OR A SIGNIFICANT DIGITAL PROJECT WITH DEMONSTRABLE IMPACT, ACCOMPANIED BY TRADITIONAL PUBLICATIONS IN REPUTABLE PEER-REVIEWED JOURNALS AND BOOKS, OR A SUBSTANTIAL BODY OF CREATIVE WORK (I.E., A NOVEL, POETRY OR SHORT STORY COLLECTION, MEMOIR, ETC.) PUBLISHED BY A RESPECTED PRESS, ACCOMPANIED BY OTHER PUBLICATIONS

UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS: YEAR SEVEN YOUR EXTERNAL REVIEWS ARRIVE AT YOUR COLLEGE TENURED DEPARTMENT FACULTY (OR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE) READS EXTERNAL REVIEWS AND VOTES 1) TENURE 2) PROMOTION YOUR SCHOOL (IF APPLICABLE) VOTES 1) TENURE 2) PROMOTION YOUR COLLEGE S EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OR PLANNING AND BUDGET COMMITTEE VOTES THE PRESIDENT OF YOUR COLLEGE MAKES A DECISION ON 1) TENURE AND 2) PROMOTION BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF DEPARTMENT, SCHOOL, COLLEGE

EXTERNAL REVIEWERS EXTERNAL REVIEWERS ARE ADVANCED SCHOLARS IN AN APPROPRIATE FIELD WHO WORK OUTSIDE OF CUNY EXTERNAL REVIEWERS HAVE NO RELATIONSHIP TO THE CANDIDATE THAT MIGHT PREVENT OBJECTIVITY (E.G., NO CO-AUTHORS OR GRADUATE SCHOOL ADVISORS) EXTERNAL REVIEWERS READ YOUR DOSSIER OR TENURE FILE. THESE MATERIALS INCLUDE YOUR CANDIDATE S STATEMENT AND RESEARCH AND/OR CREATIVE WORK AND SUBMIT AN EVALUATION OF YOUR WORK AS CONSIDERATION FOR TENURE YOU WILL BE CONSULTED ON THE LIST OF POTENTIAL REVIEWERS (FALL, YEAR SIX)

  5. YOUR COMPLETE DOSSIER A CANDIDATE STATEMENT SCHOLARSHIP (BOOKS, ARTICLES, DIGITAL PROJECTS) TEACHING (SYLLABI, FACULTY EVALUATIONS, STUDENT EVALUATIONS THESE GENERALLY DO NOT GO OUT FOR EXTERNAL REVIEW) RECORD OF SERVICE TO THE DEPARTMENT, SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND FIELD

  6. YOU NEED A PLAN WHAT ARE YOUR PUBLISHING GOALS? CONSIDER YOUR END OF THE YEAR MEETINGS WITH YOUR DEPARTMENT CHAIR AS THE NARRATIVE THREAD OF YOUR CAREER; USE THESE MEETINGS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO UPDATE YOUR DOSSIER AND CANDIDATE STATEMENT HOW WILL YOU SPEND YOUR CONTRACTUAL RELEASE TIME BETWEEN YEARS ONE THROUGH FIVE?

  7. ONGOING PRACTICE: WHO ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOUR CORE VALUES AS A SCHOLAR? IN WHAT AREAS WOULD YOU LIKE TO GROW AND DEVELOP? WHAT IS YOUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY? WHAT KINDS OF SERVICE INTEREST YOU?

ONGOING PRACTICE: THE NARRATIVE OF YOUR CAREER PRACTICE ACCOUNTING FOR THE LABORS OF YOUR WORK IDENTIFY AND RETAIN DOCUMENTATION OF YOUR MEASUREABLE SUCCESSES DOCUMENT YOUR NOTABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO TEACHING: DID YOU DEVELOP A NEW COURSE? CREATE AN INNOVATION? LIST YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN SERVICE

  9. SECOND YEAR SET PUBLISHING GOALS PUBLISH SOMETHING, EVEN SOMETHING SMALL FIND A CONFIDENTIAL MENTOR PRESENT AT A CONFERENCE

  10. THIRD YEAR ASSESS YOUR POSITION. WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT? SCHOLARSHIP? TEACHING? CALCULATE YOUR RISKS ESTABLISH A REPUTATION BEYOND YOUR DEPARTMENT COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY SERVICE CREATE DIGITAL PROFILES: CUNYFIRST, ACADEMIC WORKS, GOOGLE SCHOLAR PRESENT AT A CONFERENCE

ASK THAT IT IS INCLUDED IN DEPARTMENT AND COLLEGE CONSIDERATIONS FALL: DEPARTMENT VOTES 1) TENURE 2) PROMOTION; SCHOOL, IF APPLICABLE, VOTES; COLLEGE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OR PLANNING AND BUDGET COMMITTEE VOTES COLLEGE PRESIDENT MAKES A RECOMMENDATION BASED ON PREVIOUS VOTES
