Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Tenure System Faculty on a probationary period working towards tenure Faculty already tenured Eligible for Promotion and/or Tenure University of Illinois Statutes "those members of the academic staff with the rank or title of professor, associate professor, or assistant professor who are tenured or receiving probationary credit towards tenure" Tenure and Academic Freedom a means to certain ends; specifically: (1) freedom of teaching and research and of extramural activities, and (2) a sufficient degree of economic security to make the profession attractive to men and women of ability. Freedom and economic security, hence, tenure, are indispensable to the success of an institution in fulfilling its obligations to its students and to society
Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Non-Tenure System Faculty not receiving probationary credit towards tenure Faculty are on fixed term academic appointments Only eligible for Promotion in rank only University of Illinois Statutes the bylaws of a unit may grant specified faculty privileges to members of the faculty who are neither tenured nor receiving probationary credit toward tenure, and who have the rank or title of professor, associate professor, assistant professor, instructor or lecturer. The unit bylaws may further grant specified faculty privileges to faculty members with modified faculty titles under the terms research, adjunct, clinical, visiting, and/or emeritus.

Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Faculty Ranks Tenure System Assistant Professor Enters probationary period of seven academic years First academic year of service will be T1 year of the probationary period also referred to as the Tenure Clock Can be hired higher than T1 (e.g. T2 or T3) Mid-Probationary Review at the mid-point of the probationary period normally in the T3 year Must go up for P&T in T6 even if they were started higher than T1 May go up for P&T earlier than T6 if Norms & Criteria have been met
Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Faculty Ranks Tenure System Assistant Professor (continued) Receive Notice of Non-Reappointment and Terminal Contract for the 7th year if Chancellor does not recommend for Promotion and Tenure in T6 May resign before receiving Terminal Contract May go up again for P&T if they are not recommended by the Chancellor in T5 or below Service towards the completion of the probationary period Appointments beginning after ninth week of the semester may not be counted towards probationary period faculty's choice If approved, cannot be reversed Unit responsible for assisting faculty to understand implications

Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Faculty Ranks Tenure System Associate or Full Professor on Q-Contracts Faculty may be hired as an Associate or Full Professor, but without tenure, on a Q-Contract Hires on a Q-Contract have senior standing or substantial experience in the field, but not the record of academic achievement for tenure Normally up to 4 years must go up for tenure review in the last year of their contract Not granted a terminal year if they are not recommended for tenure by the Chancellor Q-Contract may be renewed for up to 2 additional years only in unusual circumstances and prior to the final year

Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Promotion and/or Tenure Process Dossier Preparation Begin in Spring Semester prior to the academic year of P&T Review the earlier the better Faculty prepare non-confidential and non-evaluative parts UEO or other senior faculty member serve as Dossier Preparer Staff members in the Unit and College serve as Coordinators Preparer and Coordinators help with preparation and complete confidential and evaluative parts Preparer and Unit Coordinator responsible to move dossier through review process within the College College Coordinators responsible to submit for University Review
Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Promotion and/or Tenure Process Review Process Withdrawal from Review Process Candidates may withdraw at any time in the review process Withdrawal for Assistant Professors in T6 will result in Notice of Non-Reappointment with a Terminal Contract Assistant Professors going up prior to T6 and other faculty members may withdraw without being penalized for future reviews Unit & College Level Review P&T Committees review and vote at each level UEO and Dean evaluations and endorsement or non-endorsement Votes and endorsements communicated to candidate after each level Negative review or non-endorsement does not stop the review

Chancellor communicates recommendations back to candidates with Deans and UEOs copied
Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs Promotion and/or Tenure Process Review Process (continued) Board of Trustees (BOT) Approval BOT approves all recommendations at its July meeting If approved, promotions and/or tenure are effective on August 16th (new academic year) BOT office communicates final approval to candidates in September Approvals are available via BOT Meeting Minutes and College HR staffs are notified of the availability of BOT approved items
