What Really Matters?
The requirements listed below are the most important to be aware of as a music major.
All others are included in CORE or music curriculum.

Lessons Requirements
 
MUSI 1810 - What’s included?
 
Lesson:
 One hour with your applied instructor each week.
Studio Class:
 All students in your studio meet together weekly to practice performing and
giving constructive feedback. Most studios meet once a week.
Common Hour:
 Wednesdays 1:50-2:40. This time is reserved for school-wide events like special
workshops, performances, or master classes. Music students should not schedule CORE classes
during this time.
Large Ensemble Requirement
 
All School of Music students are required to participate in a Large Ensemble every semester
that they are enrolled in lessons.
Students on School of Music Scholarships are required to participate in a Large Ensemble every
semester that they receive scholarship funding.
Large ensemble assignments are based on your placement audition in August/January.
Voice/Piano/Guitar
: First year students will be placed into Glee Club.
Winds/Percussion
: Will be placed into Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony, or the Wind
Ensemble/ Orchestra rotation based on audition.
Strings
: Will be placed into Orchestra but are still required to audition for seating
placement.
Redcoat Marching Band does 
not
 count as your Large Ensemble, it is an elective.
Ensemble Placement Auditions
 
Auditions take place during the first week of class. Dates, times, and
materials will be posted online at 
music.uga.edu

(3rd floor, across from Music
Library)

Students should plan to take MUSI 4700 or 4710 unless invited to participate in MUSI 4760.

Class piano requirements vary by major.
Piano majors are automatically exempt from this requirement.

Music Theory & Aural Skills
 
All first year students are required to take Music Theory I and Aural Skills I,
even if you have AP credit!
College-level music theory varies greatly between programs and teachers,
and we want all of our students to be appropriately prepared.
We will accept college-level Music Theory transfer credits for transfer
students only.
 
Important Dates
 
Drop/Add Period: August 14 - 20
Students may add or drop classes without penalty.
 
Withdrawal Deadline: October 21st
Students may withdraw from a course up until this date.
All Late Adds or Section Changes due by this date.
 
Lockers
 
You will receive an email about reserving a locker at the beginning of the
semester. Be on the lookout for this email if you need a locker!
 
Registration
Reminders
 
All your classes should be 5000-level or
below.
{6000-level and above are graduate courses}
For example: if you are in Wind Ensemble, you will
register for 4840, 
NOT
 6840.
 
If you register for an ensemble now and are
placed into a different one at the start of
the term, make sure it gets corrected in
Athena.
 
MUSI 1100 & MUSI 1110 must be entered
simultaneously
they are co-requisites.
 
Make sure all registration holds are cleared.

Make sure all holds (besides “Academic Advising”) are lifted, so that you can register
for classes following your advising appointment.
Pre-select your top five First Year Odyssey course preferences.
Look for an email from an advisor that contains more information about your
appointment.

Students with a strong piano background may consider taking the Class Piano Course Challenge exam to exempt some or all levels. If you are interested, please ask your advisor during orientation!
