2 of my more Autobiographical more Autobiographical Teachings GROWING I CERTAINLY HAVEN T ARRIVED-- Grow in Prayer seeing and hearing GOD Becoming More Childlike in Relating to God Being Childlike has never been easy for me! Relating to God or anyone else!
Reminder: The Importance of . . . The systemic and corporate side of our trust in God be part of a community acting for the good of the disempowered. The individual and personal side of our trust keep growing as God s child. TODAY S EMPHASIS! I am so thankful that NCF has always encouraged me to keep growing in both areas.
Two Biblical Themes: Contradictory or Complementary? Keep Maturing in Relationship with God Keep Becoming More Childlike in Relationship with God
Reminder: All true statements are in search of the proper context to become true truth! That is why things that sound contradictory can actually be very complementary in reality each has its proper context. And, that is why even the truest statement can become a lie if placed in the wrong context eg. Satan tempts Jesus by quoting Scripture! (Advertisers and Politicians excel here)
CHALLENGES TO KEEP MATURING IN OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD 2 Peter 3:18 --Instead, grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Messiah. To him belongs glory now and forever. Amen. (CEB) James 1:3-4--3After all, you know that the testing of your trust produces endurance.4Let this endurance complete its work so that you may be fully mature, complete, and lacking in nothing. (CEB)
CHALLENGE TO MATURE CAN EVEN BE A BIT GROUCHY A BIT GROUCHY! WHO WOULD BE A BIT GROUCHY? Guess!
DID YOU GUESS? 1 Corinthians 3:1-2 Brothers and sisters, I couldn t talk to you like spiritual people but like unspiritual people, like babies in the Messiah.2I gave you milk to drink instead of solid food, because you weren t up to any solid food yet. (CEB) (Actually the writer of Hebrews as well-- 5:12-6:2)
BUT, TODAY I WANT TO FOCUS WITH YOU ON ANOTHER BIBLICAL CHALLENGE THE CHALLENGE TO BECOME MORE CHILDLIKE IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD!
#1 #1 BECOMING MORE CHILDLIKE QUIT SQUIRMING SETTLE DOWN RELAX INTO GOD S ARMS
PSALM 131 a Weaned, not a Nursing Child-1 LORD, my heart has not been haughty, nor have my eyes looked too high, Nor have I striven for great things, nor for things too wondrous for me.
PSALM 131 Weaned, not a Nursing Child -2 But I have calmed and contented myself like a weaned baby with its mother like a weaned baby I am with myself. Wait, O Israel, for the LORD, now and until forever. (Robert Alter translation)
Jesus Encouragement to Quit Squirming and Relax (Matt 6:31-34) 1 After illustrating how the creation is filled with examples of God s provision . . . 31Therefore, don t worry and say, What are we going to eat? or What are we going to drink? or What are we going to wear? 32Gentiles long for all these things. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
Jesus Encouragement to: Quit Squirming and Relax 2 33Instead, desire first and foremost God s kingdom and God s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.34Therefore, stop worrying about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (CEB)

#2. TRUST THAT HUMBLE SERVANTHOOD IS SUCCESSFUL LIVING (More Childlike) LORD, my heart has not been haughty, nor have my eyes looked too high, Nor have I striven for great things, nor for things too wondrous for me. (Psalm 131:1)
2. TRUST THAT HUMBLE SERVANTHOOD IS SUCCESSFUL LIVING (JESUS) (Mark 10:42-43 they were arguing about who is most important! . Matthew adds so be humble like a child.) Jesus called them over and said, You know that the ones who are considered the rulers by the Gentiles show off their authority over them, and their high- ranking officials order them around. But that s not the way it will be with you. Whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant. (CEB)
Take some time and ask for Gods help TRUST THAT HUMBLE SERVANTHOOD IS SUCCESSFUL LIVING
#3. TRUST--GOD REALLY IS YOUR ABBA WHO PROVIDES YOUR IDENTITY 1 (More Childlike) Our Father . . . this is how you talk to God! (more problematic for some than for others) The God and Father of Our Lord Jesus the Messiah (Ephesians 1:3, 17) For in Jesus the Messiah you are all children of God through trust. (Galatians 3:26)
Challenged to Find Our Identity in Being God s Children (Galatians 4:4-7 CEB) 4But when the fulfillment of the time came, God sent God s Son, born through a woman, and born under the Law.5This was so he could redeem those under the Law so that we could be adopted.6Because you are sons and daughters, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father! 7Therefore, you are no longer a slave but a son or daughter, and if you are God s child, then you are also an heir through God.
Very Personal Moment as Donna was dying Either she really is God s child Or There is nothing about us humans that is lasting God keeps finding ways to assure me She is my child and in my care
Take some time to ask for Gods help Who am I really? What is my real identity? I am a child of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus the Messiah
#4 #4 TRUST GOD REALLY IS YOUR MOTHER WHO NOURISHES REAL LIFE (More Childlike) (More problematic for some than for others 2 reasons) Psalm 131:2- But I have calmed myself like a weaned baby. Wait, O Israel, for the LORD, now and until forever. 1 Peter 2:2-3 - Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Take some time to ask for Gods help TRUST GOD REALLY IS MY MOTHER WHO NOURISHES REAL LIFE
#5 KEEP ON ASKING LIKE A CHILD TENDS TO #5 KEEP ON ASKING LIKE A CHILD TENDS TO KEEP ON ASKING KEEP ON ASKING (More Childlike) (1) Jesus said it this way in Luke 9:9-13 (my translation emphasizing the Greek present tenses which usually include what scholars call continuous action or we can call keeping on keeping on! ) 9So I say to you, keep on asking, and (God) will be giving to you ; keep on seeking, and you will find; keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you.10For everyone who keeps on asking keeps on receiving; and everyone who keeps on seeking keeps on finding; and for everyone who keeps on knocking, the door keeps on being opened.
#5 KEEP ON ASKING #5 KEEP ON ASKING LIKE A CHILD TENDS TO KEEP ON ASKING (2) 11Is there anyone here among you who, if your child will ask for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish?12Or if the child will ask for an egg, will give a scorpion? 13If you then, who are evil (compared to God), know how to keep on giving good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father keep on giving the Holy Spirit to those who keep on asking! (Luke 11:9-13)
Take some time to rememberyou will not be pestering God if you . . . KEEP ON ASKING FOR MORE OF GOD S SPIRIT TO FILL AND TO EMPOWER YOUR DAILY LIFE
#6 RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND #6 RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND LET HIM BLESS YOU LET HIM BLESS YOU (More Childlike) 1 13People were bringing children to Jesus so that he would bless them. But the disciples scolded them.14When Jesus saw this, he grew angry and said to them, Allow the children to come to me. Don t forbid them, because God s kingdom belongs to people like these children.15I assure you that whoever doesn t welcome God s kingdom like a child will never enter it. 16Then he hugged the children and blessed them.
#6 RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND #6 RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND LET HIM BLESS YOU LET HIM BLESS YOU (More Childlike) 1 13People kept on bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them.14But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.
#6 RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND #6 RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND LET HIM BLESS YOU LET HIM BLESS YOU (More Childlike) 2 15Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. 16And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. (Mark 10:13-16 NRSV - also in Luke 18:15ff and Matthew 19:13-15)
Take some time to remember . . . RELAX INTO JESUS ARMS AND LET HIM BLESS YOU
JESUS INVITES YOU TO GODS TABLE JESUS INVITES YOU TO GOD S TABLE (Choose One To Bring before the Lord Today) (Choose One To Bring before the Lord Today) An important part of being more childlike is realizing that you cannot do everything at once! And, God does not expect you to! So, choose one to focus on for today as you respond to Jesus invitation to join him at God s table!
