  1. Path to Leadership Basic Ministry Skills Leading Public Prayer

  2. The Basic Idea in Leading Public Prayer You Are Speaking On Behalf of the Group Like you were leading a delegation to ask the Governor for action on an important matter

  3. Kinds of Prayers In worship services in most traditional churches, there are different types of prayers, as named in the Order of Service. Invocation Offertory Pastoral Prayer Benediction Many have never given thought to the meaning of the words.

  4. Invocation Literally, To call in. A request for the spiritual presence and blessing of God in a worship service. Start with praise Express trust Ask God to reveal His presence and his Word during the service Ask God to enable us to worship him Relatively brief prayer

  5. Offertory To offer. Expresses that the gifts are being offered to God as an act of worship, asks Him to accept the gifts, and asks Him to use the gifts to accomplish His purposes in the world. Acknowledge God s provision Pray for a specific ministries or persons supported by the offering. This is a brief prayer.

  6. Benediction (Latin: bene, well + dicere, to speak) A prayer for God s blessing upon the people in attendance. 2 Corinthians 13:14 (NKJV) The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. Speak blessing over the people Ask God to use the Word and the encouragement of the service in our lives this week

  7. Pastoral Prayer A pastoral prayer is usually prayed by the pastor in the worship service. It is prayed both for and on behalf of the congregation. A longer prayer Expresses worship: Helps people get into the big presence of God with our comparably little problems. Takes people into the throne room of God. Intercedes in a general way for people with their needs

  8. Preparation 1. Ask yourself: What is going on in the life of our church / class / ministry team? 2. Ask: In light of the present situation, what should we be asking God to do among us? 3. Consider that you will be in the Throne Room of God on behalf of the people

  9. Preparation 4. It s OK to make a grocery list of things you want to remember to pray about as long as you pray to God and don t settle for reading your list to the group in simulated prayer. 5.It s OK to pray in advance for the Lord to lead you as you pray.

  10. Public Prayer Pointers Really try hard not to fall back on repeating things you ve heard others pray in public. Examples: o Lead, guide, and direct us o And now lead us into the furtherance of this service o We thank Thee for Thy many, many blessings

  11. Public Prayer Pointers o We remember those less fortunate than ourselves o We thank Thee for those less fortunate than ourselves o And we will be careful to give you all the glory We usually pray like this because we are nervous.

  12. Public Prayer Pointers Some who would find written prayers to be unspiritual, would have no problem with repeating these stale old phrases. If someone keeps praying the same phrases every time he prays, he isn t following the Spirit s leading. If you were the spokesman for a group meeting with the governor, would you think about what you would say before you walked into the room?

  13. Public Prayer Pointers It s interesting how some who would find written prayers to be unspiritual, would have no trouble with repeating stale old sentences they ve heard others pray. Clearly, if someone keeps praying the same phrases every time he leads public prayer, he s isn t following the Spirit s leading. If you were the spokesman for a group meeting with the governor, would you think about what you would say before you walked into the room?

  14. Public Prayer Pointers Really pray talk to God. It s OK to be brief. Start with Praise don t storm into God s presence asking for things. Be specific in your requests. Don t cue off the music. Truly Lord, Your grace is amazing. A clear indication you didn t prepare

  15. Public Prayer Pointers Don t Give a Devotional: You aren t speaking to the congregation on behalf of God. Speak to God on behalf of the congregation. Pray in Jesus name people have died for that name don t worry about giving offense to anyone but Jesus.
