 Tom Robinson’s
statement that he was trying to help her move a chiffarobe by

diction (n) – the choice and use of words and phrases in
speech or writing
 
Example: Harper Lee’s 
diction
 in 
To Kill a Mockingbird
mimics the accent, idioms, and racism that existed in
Alabama in the 1930s.
 
 
 
verdict (n) – an opinion or judgment
 
Example: In 
To Kill a Mockingbird
, the jury’s

Ewell, which angered Jem, who believed the evidence showed
Tom’s innocence.
 
predict (v) – to say or estimate that (a specified thing) will
happen in the future
