  2. RUSKIN BOND An Indian writer was born in Kasauli to Edith Clerk and Aubrey Bond. After his high school education, Bond went to England and spent 4 years. He started writing there. He has written over 300 short stories,esssays novels and more then 30 books for children including two volumes of biographies. This poem is one among short stories and poems of the book An Island oOf Trees

  3. SUMMARY Granny had a very peculiar habit of climbing trees. She could climb the trees quickly. She started this from the age of 6 years. She had learnt it from her brother . Now, she is around 62 years and people tell her that it is disgraceful to climb trees but she agrees to be so.

  4. The problem arouse when Granny got stuck on the tree, while climbing down. She was fetched down and the doctor was consulted who prescribed one week rest. The whole family sighed with relief, but for Granny it was terrible. Ones gain Granny regained her strength and ordered to build a tree top house, where she resides in a grand style.

  5. STANZA 1 My grandmother was a genious. You d like to know why? Because she could climb trees. Spreading or high. She d be up their branches in a trice. And mind you. When last she climbed a tree, she was sixty-two. Ever since childhood. She d had this gift. For being happier in a tree than in a lift.

  6. In this stanza the poet reveals the speciality of his grand mother, who is interested in climbing trees. She climbs every tree of the garden very quickly and she doesn t listen to anyone regarding her habit. She started climbing trees from the age of six and she climbed last when she was sixty two.

STANZA 2 And though as years went by, she would be told That climbing trees should stop when one grew old And that growing old should be gone about gracefully She d laugh and say, Well, I ll grow old disgracefully. I can do it better, And we had to agree: For in all the garden there wasn t a tree She hadn t been up, at one time or another (Having learnt to climb from a loving brother When she was six) but it was feared by all That one day she d have a terrible fall.

  10. Here the poet says that though grandmother was told that it was disgraceful to climb trees at that age, she would simply laugh it out and continue to persue her hobby. She had learnt this act from her loving brother when she was six years old.

  12. STANZA-3 The outcome was different while we were in town She climbed a tree and couldn t come down! We went to the rescue, and then the doctor took Granny s temperature and said. I strongly recommend a quite week in bed. We sighed with relief and tucked her up well. Poor Granny! For her, it was like a brief season in hell. Confined to her bedroom, while every breeze Whispered of summer and dancing leaves. Bu she held her peace till she felt stronger.

  14. As feared by the family grandmother did not fall down the tree, rather she got stuck in the tree and was unable to climb down. When the doctor was consulted , he advised for a week s rest to grandmother. All the family members felt relieved because now they need not worry about grandmother s climbing tree, but for her it was a very sad time. She only thought about the scene outside the house. And waited for her recovery.

  15. STANZA 4 Then she sat up and said, I ll lie here no longer longer! And he called up my father and told him undaunted That a house on tree top was what she wanted. My dad knew his duties. He said, That s allright You ll have what you want, dear. I ll start work tonight.

  16. With my expert assistance, he soon finished the chore: Made her a tree house with windows and a door. So granny moved up, and now everyday I climb to her room with glasses and tray. She sits there in state and drinks sherry with me, Upholding her rights to reside in a tree.

  17. When Granny was alright she demanded for a tree house to be built, which was immediately made and she stayed sthere with utmost happiness.

  18. THINGS TO DO 1.Your grand mother is very dear to you. Collect a photograph of you and your grand mother (your first baby snap with her) and revise your sweet memories and jot them down in a short paragraph. 2. Ask your family members how your name was selected and narrate it as a story.

  19. WRITING SKILL Imagine yourself to be Granny. Write a diary entry expressing your ardent wish to climb trees and your family s disapproval of it.
