FAWL Annual Awards recognizes both individual members and chapters for their outstanding contributions in the legal field and their communities. The awards include categories such as Leader in the Law, Jurist of the Year, and Outstanding Chapter Awards. Members are nominated based on their professional accomplishments, community involvement, and dedication to advancing women in the legal profession. Nominations are a great way to spotlight and celebrate the achievements of FAWL members.

  3. Leader in the Law - The Awards Nominated by FAWL chapters, the Leaders in the Law are FAWL members who have made significant impacts in their communities. This recognition is intended to promote members who have made meaningful contributions in their communities through their legal service or volunteer activities; and who have been positive role models for FAWL members. Number of awards depends on chapter size. Every chapter is eligible for 1, 2, or 3 awards total: 1-100 members: 3 nominations accepted; 1 award granted 102-250 members: 4 nominations accepted; 2 awards granted 251+ members: 5 nominations accepted; 3 awards granted KEY POINT: This is a fantastic opportunity to spotlight members! Every nominating chapter will have an award recipient.

  4. Leader in the Law - The Application The recognition is intended to promote those who are not necessarily at the pinnacle of their career, but who have nonetheless made meaningful contributions in their communities through their legal service or volunteer activities and who have provided a positive role model for FAWL members. Criteria for Selection: Members who: (1) have earned the respect of others professionally; (2) have been involved in legal and non-legal activities for the betterment of their local communities; (3) exemplify the qualities of a positive role model; (4) have advanced the cause of women in their local community; and (5) are active members of FAWL. Include: 500-word statement of nomination; resume; one-paragraph bio and picture.

  5. Leaders in the Law - Pro Tips: Let members know they re eligible for statewide awards, and that your chapter actively promotes members by submitting nominations for its members! This includes accomplished attorneys as well as up-and-comers. Use your nominations as an opportunity to give recognition! A nomination in and of itself is an honor. Let your nominees know that it s not uncommon for someone to be nominated once or twice more before they receive the FAWL award. Make sure members know that a nominee is just that it is not a guarantee. Please rank your nominees if submitting more nominations than eligible awards. If your chapter submits 3 nominations and is eligible for 1 award, FAWL will want for input. Ask applicants to help with their nomination materials. They know their accomplishments the best!

  6. Jurist of the Year The Award The Jurist of the Year Award is an annual award that seeks to give recognition and acknowledgment to jurists, either State or Federal, who have consistently, fearlessly, and impartially promoted the rule of law respecting the equal rights of all who come before him or her. This award is a recognition of a distinguished career on the bench, as well as contributions to the community and the practice of law. Chapters are limited to one nomination. FAWL receives nominations from very accomplished jurists across the state. Be sure to highlight your nominee s accomplishments, but also let us know what sets them apart. Nomination criteria are important; but also include details that demonstrate how your nominee has gone above and beyond.

  7. Jurist of the Year - The Application Criteria for Selection: This award shall be given to a judge whose career exemplifies the highest standards of judicial conduct for integrity and independence; who is knowledgeable of the law and faithful to it; who bases his or her rulings on the law, rather than partisan interests, political leanings, public opinion, or fear of criticism; who is patient, dignified and courteous to all who appear before her or him; and who endeavors to improve the administration of justice and public understanding of, and respect for, the role of law in our society. The nominee must exhibit an outstanding reputation for competency, efficiency and integrity. Factors which may be considered include: (1) Judge s temperament and demeanor; (2) Judge is knowledgeable, prepared, and rules in a timely manner; (3) Judge follows the rules of law and applies them evenhandedly; (4) Judge demands professionalism from all, and shows courtesy and respect to all who appear before them; (5) Judge demonstrates a superior work ethic, dedication and diligence; (6) Judge s contributions to the improvement and/or education of the legal community; (7) Judge s contributions to the improvement and/or education of the community at large; and (8) Judge s contributions to the community, including community work not prohibited by the Judicial Canons. Additional Requirements: Nominees must currently be serving as an active Federal Circuit, District, or Magistrate Judge or State Circuit or County Court Judge. Retired judges are eligible for 18 months following retirement, whether or not they remain active on the bench. Afterwards, retired judges or judges of senior status are eligible only if they continue to be active on the bench. Preference may be given to Judges who have served at least 10 years. The nominee must be a current member of FAWL (membership dues are paid for the 2020-2021 year) at the time of the nomination.

  8. Jurist of the Year - Pro Tips Ask your jurist to assist with the nomination. Submit the very strongest nomination possible; this is the information that FAWL will use to consider your nominee. Make sure each nomination highlights how the nominee has met the criteria for the award. Keep in mind that your nominees are competing against others across the state for the same award. Let us know why your jurist is most deserving! Know your audience: FAWL committee members will not know all nominees or their accomplishments. Assume that they know nothing about your applicant and let us know why they shine.

Rosemary Barkett The Award FAWL s most prestigious award, the Rosemary Barkett Award is awarded annually to a FAWL member who has: (1) demonstrated a commitment to the goals of FAWL; (2) excelled to outstanding career achievement; (3) helped to overcome traditional stereotypes associated with women by breaking barriers, molding a new reality and a new way of thinking about themselves, others and their place in the universe; and (4) advanced the status of women in the State of Florida. This is FAWL s Lifetime Achievement award. Chapters may submit up to three nominations.

  10. Rosemary Barkett - Pro Tips: Chapters are encouraged to use their three nominations to confer recognition to deserving members. A nomination in itself is an honor! This is also a great way to let FAWL know about how awesome your most accomplished members are. For judges, think carefully about whether a nomination for this award, or instead the Jurist of the Year, would be most appropriate. Be careful to stay within the limits of the nomination criteria (1,000 word limit on nomination statement; 5- page limit on resume/CV). Remember that many recipients were nominated more than once before they were recognized with this award.

  11. Chapter Awards: Each chapter may submit nominations for all of the awards below. This is a great way to recognize the efforts of your members in putting together fantastic programming! Outstanding Chapter Award Outstanding Member Program Award Outstanding Public Service Award

Outstanding Chapter Award This award is presented annually to the FAWL chapter that has most effectively: created and expanded programming and events that further FAWL s mission and encourage members to become leaders; gained exposure and recognition in the community; promoted diversity in the workplace, the practice of law, and/or in the community; successfully recruited and retained members; and consistently participated in FAWL. The award recipient will receive a five hundred dollar ($500.00) cash award PRO TIP: This is a great way to let FAWL know about the efforts and accomplishments of your chapter!

  13. Outstanding Member Program Award This award is presented annually to the FAWL chapter that has presented an outstanding program that is: educational or benefits women lawyers in their business or practice, or provides a pathway to leadership; reflective of FAWL's mission; easily recreated by other chapters; and has quality supporting materials. The award recipient will receive a two hundred fifty dollar ($250.00) cash award. PRO TIPS: Choose a member program that is unique or shows how your chapter has been innovative in its programming. Include materials from the program that would allow other chapters to recreate it.

  14. Outstanding Public Service Award This award is presented annually to the FAWL chapter that has provided an outstanding program that is beneficial or educational to a non-legal segment of the community; reflective of FAWL's mission; and easily recreated by other chapters The award recipient will receive a two hundred fifty dollar ($250.00) cash award. PRO TIPS: Explain how your program interfaced with the community and the impact that it made. Include materials from the program that would allow other chapters to recreate it.

Utilizing FAWL Awards to encourage Utilizing FAWL Awards to encourage membership and recognize members membership and recognize members Many chapters did not submit nominations and thus did not have award recipients be sure to take advantage of this opportunity! Establish a local chapter Awards Committee! This is a great opportunity for your chapter to provide (1) an opportunity for member engagement, and (2) extra hands to assist with preparing the strongest nominations possible. Remember to leverage membership in FAWL when recruiting new members for your chapter. FAWL relies on individual chapters to submit nominations to identify high-achieving members.
