Coursework (NEA) , the exam and music video You don t have to do a music video for coursework. There are 4 choices music video, television (opening 3 mins of a documentary), magazine (2 editions with front page and contents page) and radio (3 mins of a current affair programme). BUT . You do have to do music video in the exam so whether you end up doing a music video or not for coursework, you will need these notes for the exam. Don t worry if you already know you want to do something else for coursework, start off the coursework blog with these notes on music video and then add a post which explains why you changed your choice.
First post on the blog You can do a little introduction if you want to as your very first post But I would like you to choose your 3 favourite music videos and write a short piece about why you like each video. Remember this is about why you like the video not the song. Of course they can be connected but write about shot types, editing, mise-en-scene and representation/messages. Have a link to the video as part of the post.
The exam Questions on Music Video will come in Paper 1, Section B. You will b expected to write an essay in 20-25 minutes. Section B will have 2 questions. There are 3 areas (Music Video, Advertising and Magazines -The Big Issue) so 1 area will not have a question. Both Advertising and Magazine will have an unseen text but with music video you will use references examples from a video you have studied. DON T WORRY IF THIS IS CONFUSING IT IS THE MOST CONFUSING PART OF THE EXAM I WILL EXPLAIN ALL THIS LATER You must choose 1 text from List A and 1 text from List B we will study all 4 videos so the choice is yours. List A List A Massive Attack Unfinished Sympathy Emeli Sande - Heaven List B List B Radiohead Burn the Witch David Guetta - Titanium Notes that you make for the exam you can also transfer to/ use for your coursework blog as Research.
Different formats for music video Fundamentally there are 3 formats for music video to take narrative, performance and a mixture of the 2 (narrative/performance perhaps the most common type). We are going to look at 3 videos. Watch them, take notes and add the notes to your new blog: Skrillex Bangarang https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJVmu6yttiw Take notes on the type of narrative and what happens. Is it connected to the lyrics? Do you know the intertextual reference - it comes from the title of the song. Also note that narrative videos are very popular for dance music. How does it promote Mr Skrillex? Gotye Somebody That I used to know - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY what sort of shots are used ? Why would an artist want to do a performance video - sometimes concerts are used ? How is Gotye promoted by the video ? Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX Fancy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-zpOMYRi0w How are narrative and performance mixed together ? What film is the story based on ? What is the story ?At what parts of the music video do the performances take place ?
Andrew Goodwin and Illustration/ Amplification/ Disjuncture Andrew Goodwin, who wrote a very influential book on music video in the 1990s called Dancing in the Distraction Factory, said there the relationship between lyrics and music video can be put into 3 categories Illustration This is when a music video can use a set of images in order to illustrate the meaning of the lyrics. This is commonly used and Ed Sheeran s A Team is a good example though worth noting it does NOT mean every word/lyric is included. Amplification Goodwin stated that this is when an idea in the lyrics is represented in the video even if the video main theme might be appear to be different from the lyrics. Fancy and Sia s Chandelier are examples of this and this is a common format. Disjuncture - Goodwin identified that in some music videos the meaning of the song is completely ignored and there is no reference to the lyrics - is this the Skrillex video or does the 1 line (Shout to all my lost boys, sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-shouts to all my lost boys we rowdy) reflect the video?
Find examples of Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture Using Goodwin s categories that are on the previous slide find an example for each of the 3 categories given by Goodwin and then add these to your blog. These notes should be a separate post. You could use the A Team as an example of Illustration but also could also consider whether Fancy or Chandelier is an example of Amplification And if Mr Skrillex can be considered as an example of Disjuncture BUT YOU CAN FIND YOUR OWN EXAMPLES ALL MINE ARE QUITE OLD SKOOL (but I am so groovy !) When you write to your blog add a comment about whether there is a relationship between Illustration/Amplification/Disjuncture and Narrative/Performance/ Narrative-Performance ? For instance are videos that are classified as disjuncture also narrative based and those that are amplification a mixture of narrative and performance. Or does it just depend ?
Create a new blog for coursework. Email the URL to me. Write a post my 3 favourite music videos. To sum up Write another post with examples of narrative, performance and narrative/performancevideos. The final post should be a discussion, with examples, of Andrew Goodwin s ideas about Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture in music video. All your posts should be visual there doesn t have to be loads of writing.
