Luke Part 1 Lesson 1
Luke 1:1-4 What? The author investigated carefully everything that had been taught to Theophilus and himself vs. 3-4 He was NOT an eyewitness Servants of the word: teaching concerning salvation through faith in Christ (Amp. Bible) He wrote in consecutive order so we can know the exact truth
Luke 1:5-7 Who? Zacharias He and Elizabeth had no children Both advanced in years Both were from Levitical descent Both righteous and blameless before the Lord Both made an impact in their community because of their walk
Luke 1:5 When? In the days of Herod the Great King of Judea Reigned from 40-4 BC, during Christ s ministry Jesus refers to him as that fox Lk. 13:32 King that gave John the Baptist s head on a platter to Herodias s daughter Mt. 14:11 Married his brother s wife for which John rebuked him Killed anyone that was a threat to his throne, including family members
Luke 1:8-10 Timing: while Zacharias was serving as priest before God in the appointed order of his division (Ex. 30:7-8; I Chron. 24:1-19) Probably once in a lifetime opportunity Chosen BY GOD through lots to burn incense People outside the temple are praying and watching for the smoke to appear
Luke 1:11-14 Gabriel appears to the right of the altar of incense. RIGHT WHERE HE IS, and breaks the 400 years of silence Do not be afraid Your petition has been heard Elizabeth will bear a son and you will name him John: God named him Many will have joy and gladness and will rejoice at his birth, including you.
Luke 1:15-17 John: He will be great in the sight of the Lord (they were righteous in the sight of the Lord) No wine or liquor Filled with Holy Spirit while yet in the womb Turn many of Israel to the Lord Go before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah (Mal. 4:5) Turn hearts, and disobedient to attitude of the righteous Prepare a people for the Lord
Attitude of the righteous Phronesis: Visceral ( deep inward feelings) opinion which pleases the Lord because it is shaped by God s in-workings of faith (divine persuasion); Christ enlightened perspective which has the insight to make intelligent (shrewd) life applications in the will of God. Knowledge and holy love of the will of God
Malachi 3:1; 4:5-6 John fulfilled these prophecies made hundreds of years before He was God s messenger to clear the way before the Lord came His job was restoring hearts, turning Israel to the Lord He was a forerunner in the spirit and power of Elijah
Luke 1:18-20 Zacharias: didn t believe what the angel said (vs. 20) Mute until these words were fulfilled Gabriel told him who he was: a messenger who stands in the presence of God, sent to bring him good news This is the same angel who appeared to Daniel to explain his visions
Luke 1:21-26 People were waiting to see the smoke Zacharias comes out and cannot speak Goes home after his service is completed Elizabeth becomes pregnant and secludes herself for five months In her sixth month, Gabriel is now sent to Nazareth, about 100 miles away from her, to her relative Mary
Luke 1:27-34 Mary: a virgin, engaged to be married to Joseph, descendant of David Gabriel appears to her, 6 months after he appeared to Elizabeth, and says, Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. Then, he said do not be afraid. You will conceive, bear a son, call Him Jesus. God named Him. Mary believed Gabriel, but asked how.
Jesus Great Son of the Most High Throne of His father David, reign over house of Jacob forever His kingdom has no end Holy child called the Son of God Both John and Jesus were prophesied before they were conceived
Cross-references 2 Sam. 7 David s house and kingdom were forever Ps. 89 & 132 God made a covenant with David which promised a seed forever and a throne IF there was obedience, keeping the covenant. Matt. 1:1 Jesus, the Messiah, was a descendant of David
Luke 1:39-45 Mary hurried to Elizabeth, she believed Gabriel when he said she was pregnant Elizabeth heard the greeting and John leaped in her womb for joy She was filled with the Holy Spirit Exclaimed that Mary was blessed, along with the child inside who was her Lord, so the Holy Spirit had come upon her already Mary was blessed because she believed
Luke 1:46-56 The Magnificat Mary exalted and rejoiced in God her Savior and called herself a bond-slave She knew all generations would call her blessed: yet she was a pregnant woman out of wedlock in Jewish society . It was all about Jesus, and not about her
GOD Mighty One who does great and mighty things Holy and shows mercy toward those who fear Him Scatters the proud and brings down the rulers from their thrones Exalts the humble, fills the hungry and helps His servant Israel. Remembers mercy
Cross References Gen. 12 & 15 God promised Abraham that He would bless him and all the families of the earth would be blessed. Promised a seed and land, forever Gal. 3 Seed was Jesus. Abraham believed this and it was counted to him as righteousness, just as it is with everyone who believes
Luke 1:57-66 Mary stays with Elizabeth for 3 months and leaves her at the end of her pregnancy Elizabeth gives birth to John and on the 8th day, brings him to be circumcised Gen. 17:9-14 They kept the law Zacharias names him John, his mouth is now opened and his tongue is loosed. First thing he does: Praises God, which caused fear on all those living around them
Luke 1:67-75 Zacharias is filled with the Holy Spirit Now he is not only a priest, but he also got to prophesy about his son and Messiah. God has accomplished redemption for His people and raised up a horn of salvation Jesus He praises God for the covenant made with Abraham
Luke 1:76-79 Now he prophesies about his son: You child, will be called the prophet of the Most High You will prepare the way for the Lord To give Israel knowledge of salvation BY forgiveness of their sins (Heb. 10:1-18) Illustration of the sunrise shining on darkness: 400 years of silence, now broken Is. 9 The people in darkness .
Application Luke 1:80 John grew physically and spiritually, until his public appearance to Israel Are WE growing spiritually as we grow old physically? Do WE make as much of a difference in our community as Zacharias and Elizabeth did because we walk so righteously?
