How do I use “How Many Cubes are in Step 5?”
www.stevewyborney.com
Every level includes a growing pattern. As you play the PowerPoint, notice that questions will appear along
with the structures. Use the questions – or adjust the questions – to guide the conversation.
Near the end, there is a reveal box. The reveal shows the number of cubes.
However, the final structure in the pattern will still remain hidden.
This gives you an opportunity to ask students to describe what they are visualizing before it is revealed.
Then with one final click, the black box will disappear and the final structure will appear.
Choose the level (or levels) that best suit your class and adapt to meet the needs of your students.
Google Slides
If you are using google slides instead of PowerPoint, I’ve specifically designed this file to also work for you.
1.
Download the PPT File.
2.
Upload it into your google drive. To do that, simply drag it into a google drive folder .
3.
Right-click and open with Google Slides. Instead of Right-Clicking, you may also simply be able to double click it.
4.
Click the “Present” button in the top right corner.

How are the structures the same? How are they different? How many cubes are there? What do you think the next structure might look like?
What do you notice? What else do you notice? How many cubes will be in step 5? How do you know? How else could you know?
It’s time for The Reveal. The number of cubes in step 5 is…
What will the structure in step 5 look like? Why do you think so? It’s time to reveal the structure. Here it is…
