Exceeding Righteousness: Unpacking Jesus' Teachings from Matthew 5-7

Matthew 5-7

The Sermon on
the Mount (10)
The Teachings of Jesus - 2020

Matthew 5:20
We have been studying the
“Sermon on the Mount”
A message early in the ministry of
Jesus, and likely a message
frequently presented
This sermon addresses the nature
of the Kingdom of God and life
therein.

The Righteousness of the Pharisees

We have addressed the “Beatitudes”
(
5:3-12
)
Our example as salt and light (
5:13-
16
)
The purpose of Jesus coming – to fulfill
the Old Law (
5:17-19
)
Matthew 5:20
– unless your
righteousness exceeds the
righteousness of the scribes and
Pharisees…

The Righteousness of the Pharisees
The Sermon on the Mount

But I Say to
You…
Matthew 5:21-48
(Intro)

What is true righteousness?
It is being right with God based
upon our motives AND actions
How should our righteousness
exceed that of the scribes and
Pharisees?
“You have heard that it was said…”
“Let me show you how…”
The Righteousness of the Pharisees

There was clearly a problem with
what was being taught by them!
It is clear that the Pharisees, scribes
and others were NOT doing what
God expected, NOR were they
following the Law of Moses!
“You have heard that it was said…”

They had perverted the LOM in
many ways by replacing its
teachings or modifying them to their
own desires.
Jesus wanted something that
EXCEEDED their “righteousness” in
God’s eyes!
“You have heard that it was said…”

What exactly was Jesus
addressing?
They had corrupted the Law of
Moses by modifying what it actually
said AND by disregarding
the intent
of what God expected.
(We shall see this in the 6 examples
that follow)
“You have heard that it was said…”

What exactly was Jesus
addressing?
Understand that Jesus taught the
keeping of the Old Law and He did
so Himself – perfectly!
Matthew 5:18, Hebrews 4:15,
7:26-28, 1 Peter 2:21-22
But He saw their corruption -
“You have heard that it was said…”

What exactly was Jesus addressing?
But He saw their corruption – their
hypocrisy, pride and opportunistic
And they manipulated the LOM to
justify what they did!
Cf. Matthew 15:1-9
1) They added to the law with their
traditions
2) They created loopholes to specific
commands
“You have heard that it was said…”

Thus Jesus was dealing not with
what the Law of Moses actually
said, but what they had added to it,
taken away from it or what they
changed about it
This was their oral traditions, or the
like
“You have heard that it was said…”

What was Jesus addressing?
What the LOM actually taught?
(contrasting the LOM with their oral
traditions)
1.
Consider how the leaders had
corrupted the truth and there is no
doubt Jesus was addressing their
corruption of the LOM
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
What the LOM actually taught?
2.
Jesus had just declared the LOM
would remain until “all is fulfilled”
(
17-18
)
3.
Usually when Jesus appealed to
the Old Law He would say, “It is
written”, etc.
(Matthew 4:4,6,7;
21:13, etc.)
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
OR describing the new law of the
coming kingdom?
1.
Jesus came to replace the Old Law
(
Colossians 2:14, Hebrews 8
)
2.
As Jesus elaborates, it goes deeper
than what the LOM actually says in
many cases, explaining the motives
behind the intended law.
He gets to
the HEART of the matter!
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
OR describing the new law of the
coming kingdom?
3.
The
“But I say to you”
construction
is consistent with explaining things
beyond the LOM (
Matthew
11:24
– day of judgment
, 12:36
every idle word
, 17:12 –
Elijah
has come
, 26:29 –
I will not
drink
)
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
OR describing the new law of the
coming kingdom?
4.
One author notes this is
a contrast
between the Pharisaic corruptions of the
Old Testament and the true righteousness
of the kingdom – a righteousness that
was anticipated in the law and brought to
its fullness in Christ
.”
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
OR describing the new law of the
coming kingdom?
5.
I believe MUCH of the teachings of
Jesus was directed toward what He
was coming to establish.
That could include these sayings!
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
Could it be BOTH?
Elaborating on both what the LOM
actually taught AND life in the
coming kingdom?
WHAT would these have in
common?
The HEART (and intent)
of God’s laws.
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
Could it be BOTH?
God has ALWAYS expected serving
Him from the heart!
He always demanded proper motives
and in many instances weighed that
as He judged
Sadly, many Jews saw the LOM as a
works based law that EARNED
salvation – motives were irrelevant
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
Could it be BOTH?
God has ALWAYS expected
serving Him from the heart!
The LOM and the heart –
Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Isaiah 29:13,
“…their hearts far
from Me…
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
Could it be BOTH?
God has ALWAYS expected serving
Him from the heart!
Ours is a law of the heart –
Romans
10:10, 2:29 -
circumcision of the
heart
Ephesians 3:17
– Christ may dwell
in your hearts
Colossians 3:16, 22
– in sincerity
of heart
“But I say to you…”

What was Jesus addressing?
Could it be BOTH?
Lesson: We must NEVER dismiss
the intent of God’s will
, regardless
of which law one is under!
1 John 4:19,
We love Him
because He first loved us
Hebrews 5:9,
author of eternal
salvation to all who obey Him
“But I say to you…”

Not only is
murder wrong, but so is
anger and cursing others (
21-26
)
Not only is adultery wrong, but so is
lust (
27-30
)
Divorce for just any cause is wrong
(
31-32
)
Oaths are meant to be kept, not
manipulated (
33-37
)
Retaliation belongs to God (
38-42
)
Not only do you love your neighbor,
but EVEN your enemy (
43-48
)
“You have heard…But I say…”

Will you accept what
God says, rather than
what you THINK?

Let us pray!
