  1. Working from Home? How to reduce ergonomic discomfort

  2. Many employees working from home are using laptops as a primary computer Follow the same posture guidelines as when you are using a desk at work. Since you don t have the same equipment at home, this may take some adaptations to your home work area.

  3. Common discomfort producing postures when using a laptop as a primary computer Head down to view screen which is too low: Headache, neck and shoulder discomfort. Arms reaching forward: Middle and upper back discomfort, especially between the shoulder blades. Lack of back support: Low back and hip discomfort.

  4. Common adaptations to ideally use a laptop Use a chair that allows you to sit back. If needed, add a towel or pillow in the lower back area to better support the back. Be sure your feet are supported! Raise the laptop up so the monitor area is more aligned with your eye. Use a separate keyboard and mouse.

  5. No Sound

  6. Other shorter term modifications For individuals shorter than six feet, finding a keyboard height that is low enough can be challenging. Many full size ironing boards have lower heights and could be used as a keyboard tray.

  7. Other shorter term modifications A lap board or pillow in your lap could also be used while working from a lounged position. This will raise the monitor section while sitting in your lap.

  8. Get up and take stretch breaks A comfortable surrounding can trick you into getting up less frequently.
