Welcome to EPA Worker Protection Training Your trainer will be making occasional announcements to allow you to check your speakers. All participant's microphones are muted; questions should be submitted via the chat box.
EPA Worker Protection Training Compliance with the Worker Protection Standard (WPS) Final rules became effective January 1, 2018
Who needs this class? Anyone employee who may work in areas where pesticides have been applied in the production of agricultural plants. This includes people working in greenhouses, fields, growth chambers. Who Does Not Need this Class? Anyone who possess a MDARD Certified Pesticide Applicators License does not need to take this class. Landscaping pesticide application is not covered by WPS training
Overview This class is only to be presented by a certified applicator who has submitted a copy of their MDARD Certified Applicator License to train@ora.msu.edu or by someone who has successfully completed the EPA-approved Worker Protection Standard train the trainer course. This class covers the general information required by WPS. You must complete site specific training at each facility you will be working at, including farms, greenhouses and growth chambers.
Danger Sign for Pesticide Applications This sign is posted at the corners of the field In greenhouses they should be posted from all reasonable entry points. These signs should NEVER be ignored.
Injury Or Exposure If there is any injury or exposure, it must be reported immediately. It should be reported to the site/farm manager ASAP. They can help coordinate decontamination if its needed. Lone Workers PREPARE Know where on the farm you are going and what your task will be. Take along a basic first aid kit and know how to use it. Take a well-charged cell phone. Check in before heading out to the field. Make sure others know where you will be and when you will return. If you will be out for an extended amount of time, arrange to check in that you are okay. UPON RETURN: Check in when finished and you are back at base farm.

I am a CERTIFIED APPLICATOR, what am I allowed to do under WPS? Certified applicators can mix, load, apply, do maintenance work on application equipment, move open pesticide containers. You can also do any task that a worker can under WPS
I am a WORKER what am I allowed to do under WPS? Workers can harvest, weed, prune, carry nursey stock, repot plants, water, etc. Activities that don t include handling pesticides directly or pesticide application equipment are allowed. They may NOT handle OPENED pesticide containers (including any empty containers including rinsed containers), mix, load or apply pesticides, or work on any application equipment.
A note about Handlers MSU does not allow for handlers; handlers are only allowed for private applications and MSU is a commercial entity under MDARD s classification. Any task that goes beyond what a worker is allowed to do has to be done by a certified applicator. This is MDARD s determination from their interpretation of the regulation.
Following This Event: You will receive a form via email that you must sign (physical signature) and return to EHS within two business days (48 Hours). Instructions are on the form. Your completion will be recorded in Ability training system (https://train.ora.msu.edu) within 1 week. This classroom training is required annually schedule next year s training as soon as you receive your email reminder. Site-Specific training for each location you report to for work. Workers need to notify the site they are working at that they have retaken WPS, especially places with controlled access, such as the greenhouses or growth chambers (you will get locked out!).
Site-Specific Training You must receive MSU facility site specific training before entering fields or facilities where pesticides are applied. Check in with the farm manager, reception staff, greenhouse staff. Location of the Central Notification Area Learn the items on the Central Notification Area Decontamination station location(s) and materials available there Policies and procedures to request entry to a treated area outside of normal working hours The Site/Farm Manager will record your site-specific training
