Reading Fluency with Geodes, Fundations, and Heggerty Emily Harris Daviess County Public Schools emily.harris@daviess.kyschools.us
Guided Reading Overview At East View Elementary school, primary grade levels have multiple tools to be utilized during Guided Reading Instruction. I have made sure to incorporate an extensive guided reading plan as we have switched from completely online, A/B schedule, and completely in person. We utilize Geodes, Fundations, and Heggerty to build phonics, reading fluency, and comprehension. We also supplement with Reading A-Z texts and RAZ kids which was very helpful during online instruction. Students also use site word books to reach fluency with site words.
Tools Fundations- Focuses on foundational skills that students will need to achieve reading fluency and comprehension. This curriculum comprises of skills based on first grade content standards. (Examples: digraphs, vowel teams, silent e, high frequency words, welded sounds, etc.) Students learn phonemes and phonemic words through reading and writing: words, phrases, sentences, and passages. Geodes- They are decodable readers that focus on using foundational skills from the Fundations curriculum to support reading fluency and comprehension. Skills that students learned through Fundations are seen throughout the Geode texts. Heggerty- Builds phonemic awareness through patterns, rhymes, breaking apart, and building words. Students must listen to individual sounds, parts of words, and whole words to build fluency.
Beginning- Testing Reading Levels Online At the beginning of the year, we started out teaching completely online. It was difficult at first to come up with a plan to strengthen every students reading level. At the start of the year we used Pioneer Valley to test students reading levels in primary. This is a very useful tool to get baseline data especially with being completely virtual. Using this data, I was able to put students into guided reading groups.
Guided Reading Plan Online Students were placed into reading groups based on their reading levels through the Pioneer Valley Assessment. I had six groups of students that I met with 20 minutes daily. Depending on students reading level, I would pull different texts for students to read together in their group. Students did not have the book in their hand but were able to read when presented on my screen. Group 1-4 (Reading Level A-B)- Reading A-Z leveled books and Geode Decodable Readers *students were reading below grade level at the beginning of the year* Groups 5 (Levels C-G)- Geode Decodable Readers *students were on grade level* Group 6 (Reading Levels I and above)- Reading A-Z leveled books *students in group 6 were reading above end of first grade level*
Guided Reading Plan Online We would spend two days on a text in guided reading groups. Wednesday s were shorter virtual days so they would be utilized as days to test on site words books and go over additional foundational skills from our Fundations Phonics Curriculum. Example: Monday and Tuesday- text one Thursday and Friday- text two Beginning a text: Predictions of text. Picture walk- notice and wonder Overview of certain vocabulary words that they will see in the text as well as words that are not yet decodable based on skills taught in Fundations. 1. 2. 3. During: Read page by page. Discuss patterns in words as well as foundational skills that they recognize from Fundations (example: words with digraphs) Support with words that are not yet decodable or trick words. 1. 2. 3. After reading a text: *Not completed until after a second reading. Comprehension questions. 1.
Guided Reading Plan In Person Guided Reading in person looks similar to online. When students are tasked to read with the teacher, we go over the same steps as we did online. The other three parts are independent activities. Students are given activities in their baggies to complete based on the foundational skill that they need the most support with. Guided Reading in a bag: - Read text with teacher (Geode or Reading A-Z). - Fundations practice - Writing about the text - Site Word Practice
Collaboration The Reading Recovery teacher and I have collaborated with guided reading groups. She will pull a group of students during guided reading centers to work on additional foundational skills, reading fluency, and comprehension. This helps reinforce concepts taught in class through Fundations, Heggerty, and Geodes. The Reading Recovery teacher also put together Heggerty videos for students to participate with. This has been very helpful this year! Students would watch the videos when we were completely virtual or in person. Students were also assigned to participate with the video during A/ B online instruction. Consistency has been key with our daily schedules throughout every schedule change!
Assessment Not only do we use Pioneer Valley to test students reading levels, we also use two other assessments to determine students phonemic awareness, reading fluency, and comprehension. One assessment comes from Fundations and the other comes from Heggerty. Fundations: Students are tested on their ability to read decodable sounds, words, and phrases as well as trick words. Heggerty: Students are tested on their ability to blend phonemes, segment words, and read words with a set skill (example: vowel teams, long vowels)
Progress- Reading Levels Overall, students have made amazing progress this year! I am excited to see their growth from January to May. The majority of students have made growth in reading fluency and comprehension.
