How do we make decisions?

Sometimes impulsively, without fully
considering the consequences of our actions

How do we
make decisions?

Based on emotions like
anger or fear, or because
we’re hungry, tired or
anxious.

How do we
make decisions?
Indifferently, when we
don’t really care about
the outcome, or don’t
think our choices make a
difference

How do we
make decisions?

To make other
people happy, or to
avoid conflict.

Based on what other people are doing, influenced by their
actions or opinions.

How do we make decisions?

How do we make
decisions?
Based on past experiences,
good or bad.

How do we make decisions?

Through research and critical thinking, considering our choices and
their possible outcomes.

How do
we make
decisions?

Sometimes by
walking away,
trying not to
make a decision
at all.

Build your decision-making skills
Break big decisions up into a series of smaller ones
Make less-important decisions to practice
Recognize and acknowledge when you are making decisions
Make a list of decisions you made that had positive outcomes

After the decision is made

Identify:
How did you make it?
How do you feel about it?
What was the outcome?
If it wasn’t right, or you’ve “outgrown” your decision…
make another one.
Slide Note

When we were talking about the things you might consider when you’re going to buy a car, a lot of them could be divided into two main categories: the head, and the heart. The head would be the logical, research-based part of your decision, while the heart would be the emotional impact of the decision – the want.

 Ask: So, what’s your dream car? Answers will vary by participant. Follow up by asking why it’s their dream car. What is it about that car that they like so much? Answers will vary again, but pay particular attention to references to emotion, status, influence, a “cool factor,” and/or fun. If anyone references things like durability, low cost, good gas mileage, or high consumer ratings make a note of that.

 Ask: When you think about what drew us to our dream cars, did most of what you heard sound like the head talking, or the heart? Answers will vary by group, but most emotion-based responses would fall under the heart, while fact-based responses fall under the head.

There’s nothing at all wrong with emotion – and sometimes, we can make really good decisions with our hearts. The trick is balance – and figuring out how to weigh our options for the best possible outcome.
