  1. Roving on Mars 2020 Utilizing Current Events in Space Exploration to Engage Diverse Learners

  2. Hello! Taylor Marconi - Propulsion Design Engineer, Sierra Nevada Corporation, Madison, WI Jill Marconi - STEM Grades 5-8 Poland Middle School, Poland, OH Jenny McCall - 7th Science & PLTW, Kenosha School of Technology Enhanced Curriculum, Kenosha, WI Thank you for joining us! 2

  3. Develop a model for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool or process such that an optimal design can be achieved. MS-ETS1-4 3

  4. Engineering Design Interview with an Aerospace Engineer What led you to become an engineer in space transportation? What did your teachers do that encouraged you? What did your teachers do that was discouraging? 4

  5. Looking for: a low cost, hands-on activity for your students? a great STEM activity to incorporate into your science class? a fun cross-curricular activity to share with your team? 5

  6. A rover for all subjects! 6

  7. Design & Build Using recycled or low cost material Test & Improve Set up a tape measure on the floor for testing Competition Award 3D printed trophies! 7

  9. Tips for Success Pencils Wheels Mints Pick up pencils in hallways to save money. Let students choose their own wheel shape. This allows for different design solutions for students to analyze. Give students squares because they are easy for you to cut. The mints are very brittle. I tell students that I will provide only one replacement. This seems to encourage students to be careful. Duct Tape Safety Saws Your Model Duct tape works best. We brought paper tape to avoid transporting scissors. My students use MakeDo cardboard saws. You can 3D print some for your students. There is a model you can download and print from Thingiverse. The file name is Cardboard Cutter Saw. I find it s not always a good idea to show students a model. Students tend to copy the teacher s model instead of making their own design solutions. 9

  10. Science Class Take the rover to science class and use it for an inquiry lesson. Have students explore the relationship between the number of turns of the wheel and the distance the car travels or have students explore ways to make their cars travel farther or faster. 10

  11. 11

  12. 12

  13. Social Studies In social studies class explore the history of the lunar rover or the lives of those who are currently designing and building the current Mars 2020 rover. 13

  14. Henry Ford drives a rubber band powered rover! 14

  15. Dont Forget ELA, Math & Art ELA Math Art Have your rover travel to Language Arts class where students can journal about how they used the steps in the Engineering Design Process to build their vehicles. Motor over to Math class where students can graph data they collected from the inquiry completed in Science class. Students can also explore measurement topics while constructing their vehicles. Have students decorate their rovers or study materials used to make today s rovers. 15

  16. Now its a STEAM project! 16

  17. Lets Build a Rover! 17

  18. Material Needed: 2- 5 cardboard squares 1-6 cardboard square 2 rubber bands 1 straw 1 sharpened pencil 2 mint candies tape scissors 18

  19. Directions: Cut out 2 wheels from the 5 squares Fold the 6 body into thirds Carefully make a hole in the center of each wheel Make holes in the body for the pencil axle Put the axle through the body & attach the wheels Interlock the rubber bands Attach the interlocked rubber bands to the pencil axle 19

  20. Directions - continued Cut 2 slits in the front of the car body Pull the rubber band through the slits & tape to the bottom Tape the straw over the rubber band on the bottom Place one mint on each side of the straw Bend each end or tape to keep the mints on the straw Wind the wheels, place the car on the floor and let it roll 20
