Encouragement for the Brokenhearted: Scriptures of Hope and Comfort

Hope For the Brokenhearted

Various scriptures

God is our safety

The
Lord
hears his people when they call to him for
help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The
Lord
is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues
those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous
person faces many troubles, but the
Lord
 comes
to the rescue each time. For the
Lord
 protects the
bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken!
Calamity will surely destroy the wicked, and those
who hate the righteous will be punished. But the
Lord
will redeem those who serve him. No one
who takes refuge in him will be condemned.
(Psalm 34:17–22, NLT)

Peace comes from knowledge of
Christ’s victory

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—
when you will be scattered, each one going his
own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone
because the Father is with me. I have told you
all this so that you may have peace in me.
Here on earth you will have many trials and
sorrows. But take heart, because I have
overcome the world.”
” (John 16:32–33, NLT)

Hardship and death comes to us all

…Even though the actions of godly and wise
people are in God’s hands, no one knows
whether God will show them favor. The same
destiny ultimately awaits everyone, whether
righteous or wicked, good or bad, ceremonially
clean or unclean, religious or irreligious. Good
people receive the same treatment as sinners,
and people who make promises to God are
treated like people who don’t.
” (Ecclesiastes
9:1–2, NLT)

Our life and our death is meant to
honor God

For we don’t live for ourselves or die for
ourselves. If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And
if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we
live or die, we belong to the Lord. Christ died
and rose again for this very purpose—to be
Lord both of the living and of the dead.
(Romans 14:7–9, NLT)

Those who trust Jesus live after death

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the
life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even
after dying. Everyone who lives in me and
believes in me will never ever die. Do you
believe this, Martha?”
” (John 11:25–26, NLT)

We grieve, but we grieve with hope

And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want
you to know what will happen to the believers
who have died so you will not grieve like
people who have no hope. For since we believe
that Jesus died and was raised to life again,
we also believe that when Jesus returns, God
will bring back with him the believers who
have died.
” (1 Thessalonians 4:13–14, NLT)

Satan tries to stir up anxiety and panic
give it to God

…Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares
about you. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy,
the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking
for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be
strong in your faith. Remember that your family of
believers all over the world is going through the same
kind of suffering you are. In his kindness God called you
to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus.
So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore,
support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a
firm foundation.
” (1 Peter 5:6–10, NLT)

God created humans with the hope
that they would seek Him

From one man he created all the nations
throughout the whole earth. He decided
beforehand when they should rise and fall,
and he determined their boundaries. “His
purpose was for the nations to seek after God
and perhaps feel their way toward him and
find him—though he is not far from any one of
us.
” (Acts 17:26–27, NLT)

God comforts us so we can comfort
others

…God is our merciful Father and the source of
all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles
so that we can comfort others. When they are
troubled, we will be able to give them the
same comfort God has given us.
” (2
Corinthians 1:3–4, NLT)

Nothing can separate us from God’s
love

…I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us
from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither our fears for today
nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the
powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.
No power in the sky above or in the earth
below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be
able to separate us from the love of God that is
revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
” (Romans 8:38–
39, NLT)
