THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Occasion of the Epistle This is Paul 2nd epistle to the Corinthian church. In the first epistle Paul addressed both problems & concerns at Corinth church and questions from the Corinthian brethren The epistle seems to have been written while Paul was in Macedonia after he had previously left Ephesus due to the problems caused by Demetrius while in Ephesus (2 Cor 2:12) Paul sent Titus to Corinth because he was not able to make it as previously planned because of an opportunity that had been granted him (1 Cor 16:5-11 Cf 2 Cor 2:12). Because of the pressing issues addressed by him in the 1st epistle. Paul and the sternness of it (1 Cor 3:1-3; 11:17-22). He had anxiety regarding what Titus will report back regarding their state Cf (2 Cor 2:3-8; 7:8)...

THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Who Is The Comforter? God is described as the God Of All Comfort God is a title synonymous with Creator The God of the Scriptures is the Creator and Artificer of all comfort God is also described in the Scriptures as the God of Patience (Rom 15:5) of Hope (Rom 15:13) of Peace (Rom 15:33; Phil 4:9; 1 Thess 5:23; Heb 13:20) of Love (2 Cor 13:11) of all Grace (1 Pet 5:10) of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 1:17)
THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Who Is The Comforter? In all of these verses God is the supreme provider and author of the comfort provided. which means the comfort provided is perfect, sure, and sufficient
For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. (Hebrews 6:13 18 NKJV)
THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Who Is The Comforter? There is a distinct difference between the Kingdom of God and the world Jesus is Lord over His Kingdom (2 Tim 4:18; 2 Pet 1:11) His comfort is sure (1 Thess 4:17) His comfort is everlasting (2 Thess 2:16) Satan is the prince of this world (Jn 14:30; Eph 2:2) He provides a false comfort to those in the world (Lk 6:22-24) His comfort is in the world and temporal (Lk 16:19- *25)
THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Who Is Comforted? The church of God which is at Corinth and all the saints in Achaia (2 Cor 1:1-2) The comfort spoken of is that which is only in Christ (2 Cor 1:1-5) Paul refers to God as the Father of Mercies as well as the God of All Comfort Mercy- to show mercy and concern, with the implication of sensitivity and compassion to have mercy, to show compassion, mercy, tender compassion. (Louw & Nida) Jesus is the embodiment of mercy
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14 16 NKJV)
THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Who Is Comforted? And is able to provide the comfort we need (2 Thess 2:16-17) Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. God has decided, to whom comfort will be given (Rom 9:6-33) Look at how the word consolation is used in used in the New Testament Scriptures and to whom it refers
Luke 2:25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 2Cor. 7:7 and not only by his coming, but also by the consolation with which he was comforted in you, when he told us of your earnest desire, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced even more. Phil. 2:1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, Philem. 7 For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother. Heb. 6:18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT Who Is Comforted? Ultimate comfort comes from our relationship with God through Christ, knowing that we are Christians and the people of God As He says also in Hosea: I will call them My people, who were not My people, And her beloved, who was not beloved. And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, You are not My people, There they shall be called sons of the living God. (Romans 9:25 26 NKJV) And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people. (2 Corinthians 6:16 NKJV) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. (Hebrews 8:10 NKJV)
For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives. (Hebrews 12:3 6 NKJV)
