CURRENT STATUS OF SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK IN DBE Social Workers in schools are acknowledged by DBE as part of an integral part of Psychosocial services There are currently 760 Social Workers employed by the Education Sector According to Social Worker council data, there are currently 9000 unemployed Social Workers in South Africa The Department of Social Development is leading the finalization of the joint Social Services Strategy aimed at guiding the hiring of the unemployed Social Workers across different Departments. Consultations are on-going. The DBE must prepare a bid to Treasury for employment of 1252 SWs towards the available 9000
