Efficient 2-Digit Multiplication with Formal Method
In this lesson, we delve into multiplying 2-digit numbers using the formal written method, showcasing a more efficient approach than base 10 cubes. Through examples and practice exercises, students will master the technique, transitioning from the area model to a structured multiplication process. Explore the concept visually and sharpen your skills with step-by-step guidance.

WALT: Multiplying 2-digit numbers using the formal written method Last lesson we looked at a way of using the area model that was more efficient than using the base 10 cubes. Warmup solve the calculations 50 x 40 7 x 90 20 x 20 3 x 40
A reminder 14 x 22 = 200 + 80 + 20 + 8 = 308 We said that this is what we are calculating when we do formal multiplication. Let s look at how they are the same.
1 4 x 2 2 8 2 0 8 0 2 0 0 + 3 1 0 8
Another example 38 x 23 =
3 8 x 2 3 2 4 9 0 1 6 0 6 0 0 + 8 1 7 4
Another example this time without the area model support 12 x 27 =
1 2 x 2 7 1 4 7 0 4 0 2 0 0 + 3 1 4 2
1 6 x 2 3 1 8 3 0 1 2 0 2 0 0 Try this one + 8 6 3
4 2 x 3 0 0 0 Try this one 6 0 1 2 0 0 1 + 2 0 6
Independent work Use the formal method to solve: If you are stuck, start with 2 6 a) b) c) d) e) 26 x 13 14 x 49 34 x 51 89 x 72 34 x 58 x 1 3
