Manage your time to develop the skills expected of a PhD scientist 1. An ability to carry out and communicate fundamental independent research - Fundamental means a significant advance to human knowledge or industry - Research that you own, from ideas to execution to communication 2. An ability to direct research - Generate ideas, write or help with proposals - Supervise students and staff 3. An ability to teach at the college level - Convey excitement about your field - Have the breadth to teach a range of topics 4. T-shaped expertise - Cutting-edge depth in research field - Mastery of your discipline - Familiarity with neighboring disciplines
How to manage your time to achieve these goals? Self-motivate, self-organize. - You are responsible for how you spend your time - Your advisor is not your boss Doing independent research is hard! - The end goal is distant - Dead-ends, bugs, mistakes are part of the deal - Need high-level vision, technical skill, and willingness to go in weeds - Need to challenge your hypotheses and results - Need to effectively communicate and take criticism Broadening your knowledge beyond research can also be challenging - You need to find time for this and use it effectively - View this as an investment in your future - Do not tolerate your own ignorance
Managing time in your research projects The project has to be important to you else you can t be effective. Writing intro of paper-to-be can help. Jump in and get your hands dirty as soon as possible Be methodical about overcoming bugs and other technical difficulties Don t get stuck get help. Defer until tomorrow. Invest time to stay on top of the literature Don t be too enamored of your hypotheses. Re-calibrate your goals as needed. Look out for serendipity. Use reasoning and back-of-envelope calculations to save time Be your own worst critic Write early and often Never miss an opportunity to talk about your research
Managing time to broaden your perspectives Attend seminars and talk as an active participant what are you learning? How is this challenging what you know? Think of questions to ask. Seek mastery on fundamentals relevant to your field read textbooks. Never miss an opportunity to talk about your research to broad audiences in a way that reaches out to them Make sure that you understand everything that you talk about, think about what questions could be asked
Achieving work-life balance 1. Make the most of your time at work Work has to be fun it does not necessarily have to be efficient (that might not be fun) Any work that you do has to feel important learn to say no. Meeting deadlines is not fun try to stay ahead, don t think too much about timelines. Enjoy being with your peers, avoid one-upmanship or imposter syndrome Get to know your work capacity, times of day when you work best 2. Focus your time off-work on what makes you happy Avoid burn-out by taking time off anytime it feels right Find the schedule that works best for you There s nothing wrong with work-life blend if it works for you (works for me!) Make quality time for play, family, friends, and community as an investment in your life.
