Coaching Role: What To Do Know the basics of the problem at the outset Provide the basic resources to the team members: Vis Moot website CISG Database CISG and UNCITRAL Digests Essential books Be available to the team members for questions/concerns/arguments
Coaching Role: What To Do Tasks the Coach sets are MANDATORY Establish regular mandatory meeting times for the entire team At the very least, this must be once a week Set deadlines upfront for: Timeline and summary of the facts First Draft Second Draft Final Draft
Pro Tip: Create a Google Calendar Include both Official Deadlines set by Vis Organizers (available at vismoot.pace.edu) AND team deadlines (such as draft submission deadlines) Share calendar with entire team. Set reminders to go out to team members before major deadlines. *For a tutorial on how to set up a Google Calendar, see me during office hours*
Pro Tip: Demand a 5-10 hours/week commitment at the outset Includes team meetings 2x/week, and independent research/writing Increase to 15+ hours/week after second draft Includes team meetings at least 2x/week (but should be 3 or 4 as the final deadline approaches) and independent research/writing In the 2-3 days before submitting the final draft, teams should expect to work on the memo almost full time.
Coaching Role: What To Do Review in detail every draft the team submits and return substantive comments Work with team members individually to address their questions Insist on timeliness, commitment, and dedication from each team member
Pro Tip: Identifying issues and addressing questions providing the answers! Your role is to facilitate learning and guide teams towards successful competition. You are not responsible for giving your teams the solutions they are responsible for finding the solutions themselves.
Cultivate the Vis Culture Set an example: Always be on time. Demand hard work and equal participation from each team member. Attend team meetings at least once a week to observe, facilitate, and guide research. Reward teams for excellence. Encourage solidarity and team pride.
Discussion What will be the main challenges for your team members? How will you address them? What are your concerns as a coach? How will you handle team members who are not carrying their weight? How will you help manage team members who are struggling with the language or the issues?
