Creating Effective Inquiry Questions
Crafting good inquiry questions involves focusing on topics of personal interest, being open to research, avoiding preconceived answers, exploring multiple perspectives, maintaining a clear focus, ensuring reasonability, and defining terms accurately. Initiating inquiry with curiosity and a quest for deeper understanding is essential for meaningful exploration. Seek guidance from educators if needed.

HOW TO CREATE A BIG QUESTION!
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? MOST IMPORTANTLY A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION SHOULD BE SOMETHING YOU ARE INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? 2. THE QUESTION IS OPEN TO RESEARCH. THIS MEANS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SOME ANSWERS TO THE QUESTION BY DOING RESEARCH.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? 3. YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER, OR HAVE NOT ALREADY DECIDED ON THE ANSWER BEFORE DOING THE RESEARCH. TOO OFTEN WE GO AFTER QUESTIONS FOR WHICH WE ALREADY HAVE SOME KIND OF ANSWER. THIS MIGHT MAKE IT EASIER TO WRITE A QUICK PAPER BUT REALLY VIOLATES THE SPIRIT OF GENUINE INQUIRY.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? THE QUESTION MAY HAVE MULTIPLE POSSIBLE ANSWERS WHEN INITIALLY ASKED. THE QUESTION SHOULD NOT BE ANSWERED BY A SIMPLE YES/NO. TRY STARTING WITH WHY WHEN FORMING YOUR QUESTION.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? 5. IT HAS A CLEAR FOCUS. TRY NOT TO CREATE A QUESTION THAT IS TOO BROAD. IF IT IS TOO BROAD YOU LL FIND IT DIFFICULT TO FIND AN ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION. YOUR QUESTION MAY CHANGE OR EVOLVE AS YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH. YOUR FINAL QUESTION SHOULD BE AS DIRECT AND SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE, OR HAVE CLEAR SUB-QUESTIONS. THIS WILL GIVE YOU A GOOD STARTING POINT AS WELL AS SOME DIRECTION IN TERMS OF HOW TO PROCEED WITH YOUR RESEARCH. ASK YOUR TEACHER FOR HELP IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE WITH YOUR QUESTION.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? 6. THE QUESTION SHOULD BE REASONABLE. THIS MEANS THAT THERE SHOULD BE CREDIBLE INFORMATION WHICH YOU CAN USE TO RESEARCH YOUR QUESTION. YOU SHOULD TAKE AN APPROACH OF CRITICAL ANALYSIS WHEN DOING YOUR RESEARCH. THIS MEANS YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE PERSONAL CONCLUSIONS BASED ON WHAT YOU VE LEARNED. CONCLUSIONS ARE YOUR OWN IDEAS OR DECISIONS THAT YOU VE FORMED BASED ON YOUR RESEARCH.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? MAKE SURE YOU HAVE DEFINED ALL THE TERMS IN YOUR QUESTION SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE ASKING. IF YOU ARE USING SUBJECTIVE TERMS SUCH AS "LATEST" OR "MOST RECENT", BE SURE TO DEFINE EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN BY THIS. FOR EXAMPLE,"MOST RECENT" AS IN THE LAST CENTURY? THE LAST DECADE? THE LAST TWO YEARS? IF YOU ARE USING WORDS YOUR AUDIENCE MAY BE UNFAMILIAR WITH, MAKE SURE YOU EXPLAIN THE DEFINITION.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? 9. A NEW QUESTION CAN BE ASKED ONCE ALL YOUR INFORMATION IS GATHERED. A GOOD INQUIRY NEVER REALLY COMPLETELY ENDS. IT SHOULD TRIGGER NEW QUESTIONS AND THINGS YOU ARE CURIOUS ABOUT.
WHAT IS A GOOD INQUIRY QUESTION? 10. HAVING THE RIGHT ANSWER MATTERS TO YOU! FINDING THE RIGHT ANSWER SHOULD BE IMPORTANT TO YOU, SO CHOOSE YOUR QUESTION CAREFULLY.
