COVID-19 Symptoms New onset of cough Shortness of breath/ Difficulty breathing Fever (greater than 100.4) Headache Chills Muscle pain Sore throat Recent, sudden loss of taste and/or smell GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) Nasal congestions Runny nose
When to Exclude from School Only 1 symptom needed New unexplained onset of cough, shortness of breath, or fever (100.4 or higher) 2 or more of the following Headache, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, recent sudden loss of taste or smell, GI symptoms (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting) Always suspect COVID if symptoms are new and unexplained by something more likely (ex. Known preexisting medical conditions)
When Staff and Students Can Return Positive COVID-19 test (symptomatic) At least 10 days after date of onset AND fever free for 72 hours without medication AND other symptoms have improved Positive COVID-19 test (asymptomatic) 10 days from date of positive test Negative COVID-19 test (not a contact) Follow medical provider/DHS guidance, but at least 24 hours after symptoms resolve
When Staff and Students Can Return Symptomatic individual who is diagnosed by a medical provider with something other than COVID-19 Follow the advice of the provider and the Communicable Disease Chart, but AT LEAST 24 hours fever/symptom free Symptomatic individual who is not tested and not seen by a medical provider Need to assume they have COVID-19, see positive recommendations Close contacts to a positive case Need to stay home for 14 days from last contact with positive individual
Decision Tree Meant to be used as a quick reference Walks through when to send an individual home and when they can return to school Still a draft, working on finalizing before the school year
Communication with Public Health This is just a starting point! Communication will largely take place between BCPH and the school nurses What BCPH will communicate Positive student or staff in the school If there are close contacts that need to quarantine in the school What schools will communicate Daily surveillance data Information on school contacts when requested Contact tracing form demonstration
