Challenges of Promoting Good Research Practices Among Graduate and Undergraduate Students
Business librarian and MBA student reflects on the difficulty of promoting good research practices among peers, facing challenges in getting group members to cite high-quality resources. Through surveys and interviews, it was found that students struggle with starting, contributing equally in group work, and identifying relevant resources due to time constraints and resource availability. The findings shed light on the need for better communication and support in fostering research skills among students.

BUSINESS LIBRARIAN AND MBA STUDENT PEER AND PRACTITIONER
CONFESSION I Failed: To get my group members to cite high quality information resources in a project.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Is my inability to promote good information practice among my graduate school peers in class indicative of a failure to promote good information practice among undergraduate students as a practitioner?
MULTIPLE IDENTITIES Practitioner : Undergraduate information literacy instruction Peer: Learning
WHAT I LEARNED You can lead a horse to water Research practices can vary widely among the members of the same group Hard to communicate the value of good research practice when resources are scarce.
SO, WHAT HAPPENED? My Theories: Constrained by the availability of resources Time constraints Satisficing
SO, WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? Survey of my strategic management classmates Via Qualtrics Asked about researching that class s assignment 7 responses Preliminary Interviews about Research Habits Recruited participants through the email distribution list Asked about general research habits for MBA classwork 7 responses
INTERVIEW THEMES Frequency of Research Projects 1 per class Start and end of research Start: Reviewing/ clarifying assignment requirements with instructor and group members End: When personally satisfied they can meet the requirements Students feel they have enough information to meet assignment requirements. Group work: Everyone does not contribute equally. Barriers
QUOTES There s always enough information, you just have to look. I took an energy course as an elective and everyone else was using a program that I didn t even know how to open. Not everyone contributes equally and the non-contributing member changes. I don t work at Tulane and sometimes being off campus is a barrier.
LIMITATIONS Sampling issues Small All but 1: people I had been in class with Experienced/ confident researchers Analysis issue No codebook or inter-coder agreement
WHAT IS GOOD INFORMATION PRACTICE FOR A PART TIME MBA? My theory: Getting students away from a linear model of information retrieval, moving to exploratory model
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Develop and refine an instrument to understand part-time MBA student s research habits and motivations and how they may or may not differ from full-timers. More rigorous research study than mine. Research as a group responsibility
