  13. SAFETY/SAFETY PANELS SAFETY/SAFETY PANELS SAFETY AND SAFETY PANELS ! ! SAFETY Before operating the vehicle for the first time, read these operating instructions and the safety information and ensure you satisfy all the requirements stipulated. You need to be aware that your own safety and the safety of others depends on how well you maintain and operate the machine. Before attempting to work with the machine, you should first familiarise yourself with the layout and function of all operating elements. BEFORE STARTING WORK, TRY OUT ALL OPERATING ELEMENTS IN A SAFE LOCATION. READ THIS MANUAL COMPLETELY and ensure that you understand the purpose and function of all of the operating elements. Every item of equipment has restrictions of one kind or another associated with it. Prior to starting work, always ensure that you are able to correctly estimate the speed, braking action, steerability, stability and load-bearing characteristics of this machine. The safety instructions contained in this manual are not a substitute for safety regulations, insurance requirements, or federal, regional and local legislation. You must therefore always ensure that the machine is equipped in accordance with applicable legislation and directives. Modifications to this vehicle are only possible within the boundary of the technical values and are subject to due compliance with construction guidelines; any modifications which might affect homologation must be reported to the responsible authorities. CNH sterreich strives at all times to improve your personal safety: We do this by manufacturing tractors equipped with continuously improved protective equipment, and by making reference to the rules governing safe operation. IN THIS MANUAL, THIS WARNING SYMBOL IS USED TO HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANT NOTES ON SAFETY. WHEREVER THIS SYMBOL APPEARS, ALL ENSUEING INSTRUCTIONS MUST BE READ CAREFULLY AND THE READER MUST BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL RISKS OF INJURY AND EVEN DEATH. ! M171B PROPER USAGE This tractor is intended primarily for use in agricultural, rural community or forestry operations (proper usage). The primary function of the tractor is to deliver tractive power, and it can be used for pulling, pushing, carrying or for actuating defined equipment, machines and trailers. Any usage extending beyond this scope is defined as improper usage. The manufacturer shall not be liable for damage arising as a result. The operator shall bear sole liability for such risk. Proper usage also involves strict compliance with the operating, maintenance and repair instructions specified by the manufacturer. This CASE IH tractor must only be used, maintained and repaired by people who are familiar with the special characteristics of this machine and who have been advised of the relevant safety regulations (accident prevention). You must comply with the applicable accident prevention regulations as well as other generally recognised guidelines governing safety, occupational health and road traffic laws. The manufacturer excludes all liability for damage arising as a result of modifications made to the machine independently by the operator. 7

  14. SAFETY/SAFETY PANELS RULES FOR GENERAL SAFETY AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION ! ! In addition following the instructions contained in this operators manual, you must also observe the rules governing general safety and accident prevention. Comply with relevant legislation whenever you are using a public road. Before starting work, first familiarise yourself with all of the equipment and operating elements and their functions. It is too late to do this once you have started working with the equipment. Before setting off, check the area immediately surrounding the machine (e.g. children). Ensure you have a clear field of vision. Never leave the engine running in closed areas. Ensure there is adequate ventilation. Exercise caution when handling fuel. Increased risk of fire. Never fill the fuel tank near naked flames or near flying sparks. Do not smoke while refuelling. Before refuelling, switch off the engine and remove the key from the ignition. Never refill the fuel tank in closed areas. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately. To prevent the risk of fire, always keep the machine clean. Exercise caution when handling battery acid (toxic and corrosive). TRANSPORTING PEOPLE ! ! Never carry passengers unless the tractor has a passenger seat that complies with the relevant regulations. No other form of passenger transport is permitted. Children may only travel on the tractor in the seats especially designed for this purpose (available at dealerships). DRIVING OPERATION ! ! Always adapt vehicle speed to suit prevailing conditions. When driving uphill or downhill, and when traversing slopes, avoid turning corners suddenly. When turning corners, always switch off the differential lock. Never disengage the clutch when driving downhill. Connect trailers and/or equipment properly. The driving characteristics, steerability and braking action of this vehicle are all affected by the presence of attached equipment, trailers or ballast weights. You must therefore ensure that you always have enough strength to steer and brake the vehicle. Observe the maximum permitted axle loads and the gross tractor weight. If towing or carrying equipment, make allowances for the additional size and inertia weight of that equipment when turning corners. 8

  15. SAFETY/SAFETY PANELS EXITING THE TRACTOR ! ! When exiting the tractor, always ensure that it is not able to roll away (apply parking brake, chock the wheels). Remove the ignition key and lock the driver's cab. Never leave the tractor unattended while the engine is running. Never exit the driver's platform/cab while the tractor is in motion. Before exiting the tractor, lower the implement or attached equipment to the ground. ATTACHED EQUIPMENT ! ! When connecting trailers or implements, exercise particular caution, and never step between tractor and implement. Secure trailer and implements to prevent them from rolling away. Only start the tractor when all protective devices are attached and are in their correct protective positions. OPERATING THE PTO ! ! Before fitting and removing the driveline, always switch off the engine. When operating the PTO, never allow anyone to stand near the rotating PTO shaft or drive shaft. Protective guards must be fitted over the drive shaft and PTO shaft base. See page 107. Implements with a high inertia torque do not stop immediately after the PTO shaft has been switched off. Use drivelines with an overrunning clutch. Before cleaning or carrying out adjustments, always wait until the implement has stopped moving and has come to a complete halt. The PTO shaft must be covered with a protective cap immediately after removing the driveline. MAINTENANCE AND OTHER REPAIRS ! ! Never carry out maintenance work on the tractor while the engine is running. Follow the instructions in this manual or consult the dealer. Fluid (hydraulic oil) escaping under high pressure can penetrate the skin and cause serious injuries. If any fluid does penetrate your skin, always seek immediate medical attention as serious infections can otherwise result. Dispose of waste oil, fuel and used filters in accordance with local legislation. Do not drain oil onto the ground or into the drainage/sewage system. Proceed in an environmentally conscious manner. Tighten the wheel nuts after the number of operating hours specified in this manual. See page 160. Before carrying out any repair work on the machine's electrical system, always disconnect the battery earth strap. See page 211. Only use genuine parts produced by the manufacturer of this machine. Spare parts must fulfill the technical requirements of the manufacturer of the machine. 9

  16. SAFETY/SAFETY PANELS HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS ! ! Exposure to or physical contact with hazardous chemicals can result in serious injury. The liquids, oils, paints, adhesives, coolants etc which have been used in your machine can be dangerous. Always consider the environment before carrying out any maintenance work on the machine and prior to disposing of old fluids and waste oil. NEVER drain oil or operating fluids onto the ground or into containers which could develop leaks. For instructions on proper disposal you should consult your local environmental authorities, a recycling company or that company's appointed agents. BASIC RULE ! ! Before starting the tractor inspect it to ensure it is safe to drive and operate. 10

  17. SAFETY/SAFETY PANELS SAFETY PANELS IMPORTANT: If the old labels have been destroyed, lost, painted over or are no longer legible you must attach new ones.
