Review of I-195 Washington Bridge Findings on March 14, 2024
Structural engineering firm, McNary Bergeron & Johannesen, reviewed the condition of the I-195 Washington Bridge and recommended replacing the superstructure and part or all of the substructure due to identified deficiencies. The decision to close the bridge was deemed responsible. Multiple repair options were considered, with the next steps involving procuring contractors for demolition and construction at an estimated cost of $250-300 million.

Decision to close the bridge was the right and responsible decision
Bridge condition was reviewed including: In-depth inspection and testing Modeling and analysis Identified additional structural deficiencies
Multiple options for repairing and strengthening were reviewed Replacing tie-rods Strengthening piers / girders Determined that several elements of the bridge cannot be viably repaired
Recommended to replace the bridge superstructure (deck and girders) Replace part or all of the substructure (piers and foundations)
Next Step: Procure contractor / engineering Demolition of the existing bridge Design-Build construction of the new bridge $250M to $300M estimated cost Schedule and cost will be updated with selected Design-Build Team
