Context for Planning: Why Now? Purpose of a Strategic Plan: Responding to BU s mandate to develop a Where to play? strategic plan for the next ten years. How do we succeed? (Roger Martin, University of Toronto) Bringing it all together: SWOT Analysis We have developed a strategic planning page to Task Force Reports share our progress, describe our process, and Strategic Working Group Documents host our materials. Strategic Plan Components Strategic Plan: determines where your organization is going over the next few years and how it is going to get there. The plan is a coordinated and systematic way to develop a course and direction for your organization Vision: expression of institution s aspiration. Values: guide how you go about delivering your vision and the manner in which everyone will work toward achieving the vision. Aspirational. Focus Areas: high-level things that you will focus on to deliver your vision. They have to be specific and clear. Once you deliver on all your focus areas, you should have also delivered against your vision Objectives: high-level goals that sit directly under your focus areas Goals: each objective should consist of 3-4 strategic goals to deliver on that objective (SMARTIE goals) Projects: specific things you do to help you reach your objectives. Clearly defined with a start and end point. KPIs: how you measure whether or not you are achieving your objectives. Are our goals bold enough? o Are you currently working on projects or efforts that are already contributing to parts of the plan? Can you tell us more about them? o Can you see ways in which you can contribute to any of the objectives?
