Biomedical Science Pathway Why The Biomedical Pathway? PLTW Biomedical Science offers students high level education within the Biomedical sciences real-world challenges that are given. From research to labs, students engage in activities involving practice and knowledge of all things medical related and are doing it before graduating from high school. Students work with the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs, students engage in compelling, hands-on activities and work together to find solutions to problems. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take.
Certifications Advisors Professional Background The biomedical pathway offers certifications that can be be given individually through training and final exam. These are offered through PLTW and newly added HOSA program Stephanie Elias is the head advisor for the Biomedical Sciences Pathway. A headstrong and dedicated individual who has studied at appreciated universities and worked in stem cell research. After gaining years of experience, she has come to join the Grand Prairie Collegiate institute in August of 2020 to teach young and eager scholars about Biomedical sciences and prepare then for the medical field. What do students learn through each year? Medical Interventions (11th grade) Principles of Biomedical Science (9th grade) Through PLTW, scholars learn the foundation of medical conditions concerning the human body, with this, lab are performed for scholars to engage in the understanding of each lesson taught. From design and data analysis to outbreaks, clinical empathy, health promotion, and more, students explore the vast range of careers in biomedical sciences. They develop not just technical skills, but also in-demand, transportable skills that they need to thrive in life and career. With the foundation and basics of medical understanding from two previous classes, scholars delve into activities like designing a prosthetic arm as they follow the life of a fictitious family and investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Scholars will work in group activities to develop team building and collaboration skills for real world situations within medical careers. Biomedical Innovation (12th grade) Students build on the knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design their own innovative solutions for the most pressing health challenges of the 21st century. With high level knowledge of biomedical sciences, scholars are now able to diagnose and and having foundation skills in treating patients. Certification are available for students use to gain further knowledge in this field and are able to use certifications in future careers. Human Body Systems (10th grade) Also known as Anatomy, students develop knowledge over all the body systems including Respiratory, Cardiovascular, ect. through projects such as determining the identity of a skeleton using both forensic anthropology and DNA analysis, students examine the interactions of human body systems and apply what they know to solve real-world medical cases.
Internships: The internships offered are an extension of the Grand Prairie ISD Career and Technical Education Program. Internships vary depending on the school the scholar attends, internships is a well-defined short-term work and learning experience to help students prepare for a chosen career field. This prepared scholars to apply the skills learned in the classroom to a career experience and will be given projects during the period of internships while working alongside practicing professionals to ensure the best possible experience on hands on activities and practice for the real world. Grand Prairie ISD provides student transportation to and from all intern locations to ensure the safety of students. At the Grand Prairie collegiate institute, internships are given to students who apply and proceed through an interview process to be selected to participate in internships offered such as ________. This gives the scholars preparation for the four previous classes taken and is an opportunity that scholar will not want to pass. Time in hospitals, labs, and research facilities help scholars develop their real world skills needed for their future career and put them into preparation in what is to be expected. Along with this, scholar are able to collaborate with professionals and develop a deeper understanding of what is being taught.
