DISCLAIMER DISCLAIMER My goal is to share my experiences as a coach Lessons learned: what worked for me I do not claim to be an expert, there are many ways to teach/coach baseball, and I m not here to debate them I am old school in how I teach fundamentals of the game- you will be disappointed if you came to hear about launch angles and spin rates After being involved in the game for over 50 years I still learn things every year Baseball is the greatest sport, and I hope over the next 4-5 weeks you feel that the time you spent was worth it.

PITCHING FLAWS PITCHING FLAWS Rushing Rushing Hand out of glove early (no arc) arm ahead of legs (usually pitch is high): (create short-arm delivery or lowered elbow-push the ball) Solution- take ball out of glove -down- (create the arc) Land front foot early:- (throwing across body) Solution- draw a line on center of pitchers start on rubber down mound toward home (land on line or past it)

PITCHING FLAWS PITCHING FLAWS Weight Balance Weight Balance: : Weight on back foot- shoulders uneven- throwing uphill (crunch) Solution- work on staying tall- balanced Control Control: : Solution- Make adjustments on the rubber-during game (hard to correct flaw during the game) Flying Open Flying Open: : Rotating too soon arm behind legs Solution- Turn hips slightly in

  14. PITCHING FOCUS CARD PITCHING FOCUS CARD First pitch strikes? Number of strikes out of total pitches? (% goal) How many lead off batters out? How many batters 4 or less pitches? How many walks (HBP)? How did you do against 3,4,5 hitters? How did you do against 7,8,9 hitters? How did you field your position? How was your mound demeanor?

  15. CATCHER EXPECTATIONS CATCHER EXPECTATIONS Catch/block the pitch no pass balls Keep every strike a strike Be a leader (vocal)/relationship with pitcher Make accurate throws (4 seam grip)

EQUIPMENT EQUIPMENT All equipment shin guards, chest protector, mask and mitt are size appropriate Shin guards buckled outside Chest protector- fitted properly Mask/helmet/throat guard fit so that vision isn t obstructed When appropriate have catcher wear equipment during drills Catcher(s) should catch batting practice

THROWING THROWING Second Base Right foot back 3-4 Buttocks up GOING on pitch shift right foot- so that ankle bone points toward second Catch pitch Step left leg/foot toward pitcher (coming out of crouch) Glove and barehand (in glove getting grip- 4 seam) moves up toward throwing side Left elbow/shoulder pointing to second base From the ear- arm action release (flat C- like Cincinnati) 1st/3rd- practice with batter in the box/ angle of pitch- step behind/ step in front

  22. GIVING SIGNS GIVING SIGNS Fingers between thighs- back far enough to touch cup Keep fingers in crotch area (not lower) Keep knees slightly closed (so only pitcher can see the target) Keep mitt extended from left knee to shield the third base coach
