  2. Presidential Contest Moves to Granite State The Republican presidential race shifted to New Hampshire for the first in the nation primary only days after former President Trump won the Iowa caucuses in convincing fashion. Trump s campaign is trying to project inevitability by trying to deal a decisive blow to his closest competitors and sew up the Republican nomination. The former president has momentum after a strong showing in Iowa and surveys have him running ahead of his closest competitors. Trump finds himself in a position of strength despite doing little campaigning in the state and the myriad legal proceedings that have taken him off the trail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQPQ8My0X-g What is President Biden s strategy in New Hampshire? 2

  3. Presidential Contest Moves to Granite State Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is the last remaining challenger after Governor Ron DeSantis suspended his campaign. Haley is seen by many analysts as the most formidable challenger to the former president because of her appeal beyond the Republican base. Haley has regularly bested President Biden in hypothetical head-to-head matchups. The former ambassador is counting on a competitive showing in New Hampshire before the contest moves to her home state of South Carolina. Ms. Haley has sharpened her attacks against the former president even as some critics believe she waited too long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKVN9g4ykm s&list=RDNSYKVN9g4ykms&start_radio=1 Why did DeSantis suspend his campaign? 3

  4. Background and Key Concepts Presidential candidates participate in a series of caucuses and primaries every four years to secure their party s nomination. Iowa and New Hampshire have historically been the most important contests because they come first and affect the narratives of presidential campaigns. The importance of Iowa and New Hampshire in the nominating calendar has come under fire because of their small size and lack of racial diversity. The Democratic Party changed the order of its nominating contests and the New Hampshire party retaliated by removing President Biden from the ballot. Notable Republican candidates such as former Vice President Mike Pence, former Governor Chris Christie and Senator Time Scott dropped out before the Iowa caucuses. Former President Trump won decisively in Iowa and is the overwhelming favorite in New Hampshire. Governor Ron DeSantis suspended his campaign days before the New Hampshire primary. The Republican race has narrowed to two major candidates, and South Carolina will have added stakes after Tuesday s primary. 4

  5. Assessment Writing: Explain why small states like Iowa and New Hampshire facilitated the vetting of candidates for president. Why do so many candidates drop out after these two contests even though most of the states have not voted? Debate: Should the Democratic Party reinstate Iowa and New Hampshire as the two first nominating contests? Poll: Should all caucuses be replaced with primary elections? Short Answer: Why did Governor DeSantis s campaign not fare better despite the momentum he had following the 2022 election in Florida? 5
