  10. A final note on Core 21 advising I always start with a student by explaining why Core 21 is important and that it is not just a set of hurdles to avoid or get through. It is an expression of our Liberal Arts roots and an reflective of what faculty believe are important to include as part of a Cal Lutheran degree. The course they did not know existed or thought they would hate can be the class that helps them find a new purpose and direction in life. It is never good for a student to put off the requirements they do not like or do not want to take. I help a student identify which requirements will be completed in the major or minor. Students who take ENGL 110, 111, RLTH 100 in their first year are more successful.
