Welcome The Department is providing districts increased, intensive support in preparation for the 14-15 school year. These calls bring together functions across districts to make sure that all planning decisions are made with one, shared view of what is necessary to be ready for the next school year. Who: Superintendents along with senior staff (academics, technology, finance) On this call, we will: 1. Review field test progress, successes, challenges 2. Focus Area Curriculum and Assessment MILESTONE DECISIONS FOR CONSIDERATION Choose high quality curricula and train teachers to use these curricula Use benchmark assessments at scheduled points in the year to assess student progress Establish assessment calendar that includes state assessments. Ensure principals and teachers are familiar with contents of Department s assessment guides7. Familiarize students and teachers with the assessment features using tools released by the Department. Plan for state assessments Ensure schools are technologically equipped to support curriculum, academics, and assessments Louisiana Believes 4
Sample Items and Tutorials The Department has shared two tools that will allow parents, teachers, students and district staff to learn the testing platform for the field test. Tutorial: This tutorial guides users through all of the features of the online system. The tutorial can be accessed an unlimited number of times. Sample items: These are previously released PARCC items that have now been loaded onto the technology platform. These can be accessed an unlimited number of times. Practice tests: These are newly released practice tests for the ELA performance based assessment (phase I) in grades 3-11. Field Test Update Over 15,000 students have successfully taken the field test since last Monday No major technology issues in Louisiana or nationwide. Local issues were resolved quickly. Students have found the test to be easy to navigate if they had engaged in the tutorial items. Department has fielded and resolved over 100 calls to the triage hotline. Districts have reported PearsonAccess is user-friendly. Key notes for those who have yet to administer: On the constructed response items, students are often writing very short responses. Please be sure to emphasize that students should be writing thorough responses. SIGNING OUT OF TEST SESSIONS? Field Test Support The Department is committed to ensuring districts have support during the field test. Beginning the week of March 24, the Department will use the hotline below to answer all field test related questions. Focus Area Curriculum and Assessment MILESTONE DECISIONS FOR CONSIDERATION Use Department ELA and math curriculum recommendations4 to build your plan for K-12 math and K-12 ELA curricula. If deviating from the Department s recommendation, use the Department s instructional resource reviews5 to choose which curriculum resources to adopt. Based on this plan, determine which materials will need to be purchased and which materials should be discarded. Materials include textbooks, text sets, consumables, interventions, and assessments. Use Department recommended 14-15 ELA and math professional development5 support to determine which school based and district staff will participate in which of these trainings. Determine what additional trainings need to be accessed in addition to Department offerings. For other content areas, determine if any curriculum adjustments are necessary. Choose high quality curricula and train teachers to use these curricula Use benchmark assessments at scheduled points in the year to assess student progress Plan for state assessments Ensure schools are technologically equipped to support curriculum, academics, and assessments Louisiana Believes 10
Curriculum and Assessment Resources It is critical that schools, teachers, and students start the school year comfortable with their curriculum. To support this, districts can: Make curriculum decisions early and communicate by May with schools and principals. Create a plan for professional development that ensures (1) all DOE delivered training is redelivered to all math and ELA teachers in the districts, (2) set up additional PD where appropriate, (3) ensure effective collaboration structures are in place. Get the tools in the hands of teachers immediately following testing. Have teachers use a unit or the math tasks with students in May. This will: - Make better use of post testing time - Give teachers space to practice with their tools and better prepare them for the summer training - Ensure students continue rich instructional practice to prepare them for their upcoming school year Louisiana Believes 11
Guidebook Update 6-8 Guidebooks: - All districts have received three printed copies of the 6-8 Guidebooks - Districts can have additional copies printed through the state printing offices (information available in Tuesday s newsletter) High School Guidebooks: - High school Guidebooks are now posted - 11th Grade ELA will be posted as a final ELA Guidebook on April 10th K-5 Guidebooks: As a reminder, the K-5 Guidebooks will be available: - 3-5: May 1 - K-2: June 1 As a reminder, all curricular materials can be found here: http://www.louisianabelieves.com/academics/2014-2015-curricular-package Louisiana Believes 12

Information: Calendar and information released in Tuesday s newsletter All PD only available to districts Teacher Leader cohort Each event will have separate registration, information will be available via Superintendent newsletters District next steps: Review the dates and district allotments for each events Determine who from your cohort will join each training (NOTE: be careful not to sign up the same teacher for math and ELA trainings that occur on the same day) Complete district registration when each window opens Prepare to purchase additional Eureka Math training seats and webinars based on district needs Ensure Teacher Leaders have time for redelivery Louisiana Believes 14

4th Grade Promotion Policy Overview Given the transition to higher standards, BESE is committed to ensuring students and teachers have a period of time to learn these new standards and expectations. As such, BESE has passed a set of promotion policies that allow educators and administrators greater discretion in the decision to promote or retain a fourth grade student next year. The Department has published additional guidance for districts making this decision. Louisiana Believes 20
Considerations for 2013-2014 Changes in Assessments What this means for districts LEAs electing to use fourth grade promotion waivers should update their pupil progression plans and outline what criteria will be used in place of the LEAP to determine if students are prepared for fifth grade. Pupil progression plans should be updated no later than 30 days following the BESE policy becoming rule. The promotion policies are scheduled to become rule on April 20th. Local school boards must approve these changes to the pupil progression plan. Upon approval, the revised pupil progression plan should be submitted to Susannah Craig at Susannah.Craig@LA.GOV. Students who do not earn the passing standard on the LEAP must attend summer remediation and retest before being placed in fifth grade via the waiver. Students in grades 3-8 will take the LEAP and iLEAP. Results will be available in May 2014. Louisiana Believes 21
Looking Ahead to 2014-2015 Changes in Assessments What this means for districts Pupil progression plans must include guidance outlining what evidence should be considered in the place of statewide assessment. LEAs must continue to offer summer remediation to non- proficient students. However, no retest will be available during summer 2015. Students in grades 3-8 will take PARCC in ELA and Math. Test results will likely not be available until late summer 2015. Because statewide assessment data will not be available until late summer, districts should establish their own criteria for identifying non-proficient students. When establishing these criteria, multiple types of data should be considered. These non-proficient students should attend summer remediation in summer 2015. Statewide assessment data will not be available until early fall 2015. Because of this, districts should establish their own criteria for determining if a student has achieved adequate academic growth upon completion summer remediation.
