Ofsted Deep Dives Getting ready for an in depth examination of your music provision

In this session we will: Consider and discuss the music provision in your school. Think about overarching questions relating to the intent, implementation and impact of a music curriculum. Look at potential key questions/ considerations in a music deep dive. Get first hand knowledge from a music co- ordinator who has undergone a deep dive in music. Provide support materials to take away.

The BIG questions INTENT What is your school aiming to achieve through the music curriculum? IMPLEMENTATION How is your school s music curriculum being delivered? IMPACT What impact is the music curriculum having in your school?

A deep dive in Music Key questions: Before watching lessons and talking with children. (Intent) After the lesson and following discussions with children. (Implementation) Questions children were asked. (Impact) Documentation shared with inspector.

Before watching lessons and talking with children INTENT Do you follow the music national curriculum and do you add to it? Talk to me about the school's long term plan for music and the cross curricular links. In terms of sequencing, what was your thinking? What would you expect pupils to know by the end of the autumn 1, autumn 2... at the end of the key stages? Explain about your peripatetic lessons and equal opportunities/ remissions. How do you instill a love for music in all students?

After the lessons and following discussions with children IMPLEMENTATION Did anything surprise you about the learning (gaps, skills they already knew)? Why are you teaching what you are teaching now? What's going to come next? What is the end point for this unit? How do you support pupils with SEND?

Questions the children were asked IMPACT What did you learn in today's lesson? What did you learn in last week's lesson? What did you learn in music last term? To the Year 6 children: What did you learn in Year 2? To the Year 5 children: What did you learn in Year 1? How would you describe your musical journey during your time in this school?

Ofsted are looking for a Broad and Balanced Curriculum, thus looking at specific subjects including music. Other questions asked: Demonstrate sequencing in Music? (Why this? Why now?). Show/evidence progression of musical knowledge and understanding. How does a school support children who aren t making progress? Or children with SEND?

Documentation shared with the inspector Long term plan for music Planning to show cross-curricular links across school Medium term plans Skills development overview showing music skills to be taught in Years R-6 Information for parents about instrumental learning including remissions Peripatetic timetable List of additional opportunities school engaged with including Music Hub events Audio examples of pupils' achievements at the end of each year Audio examples of choir, orchestra and music groups Youtube clips of participation in Hub events

Top Tips Know your subject and what everyone is doing and if they re not, why not? Make sure everything marries-up if it s in your policy and on your plan, then it should have been done and the children should be able to recall it. Show off what you know if you re Outstanding show them everything that makes you Outstanding . If there are area for development, admit it before they ask and show them/talk them through your development plan. Make sure ALL staff and pupils are prepared including TAs and 1:1 support staff. They are interested in everyone reading from the same page (Leaders Teachers/TAs-Children) Sell it be enthusiastic be confident
