  2. The music we listen to today developed from various styles throughout the 20thcentury (from the year 1900-1999)

  3. Popular Music Styles in the 20th Century Blues Spiritual Gospel Ragtime Jazz Big Band/Swing Rock n Roll Pop Rock

  4. Blues Blues originated in the late 19thand early 20thcentury when slaves were brought from Africa to America. This type of music is usually improvised. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C- zlSq4mWiE&t=81s

  5. Spiritual and Gospel This is religious music related to Blues music. These genres are influenced by African and religious traditions. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSif77IVQdY&t=1s

  6. Ragtime and Jazz Ragtime came before Jazz. It was originally played on a solo piano in the saloon bars and dance halls of African-American communities Jazz developed from Blues and Ragtime Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPmruHc4S9Q

  7. Big Band/Swing Big Band/Swing music became popular in America in the 1930s and 1940s. This became known as the Swing era. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vOUYry_5Nw

  8. Rock n Roll Rock n Roll came from America in the 1950s. It featured electric guitar, electric bass and drums along with vocals. Elvis was known as The King of Rock n Roll Example:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1Ond- OwgU8

  9. Pop Pop is short for Popular Music It came about in the 1960s with bands such as The Beatles and The Hollies. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyNt5zm3U_M

  10. Rock Rock music features amplified instruments and vocals. It is generally louder and more rebellious than Pop music. A good example of early Rock music is The Rolling Stones. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B0Y3LUqr1Q

  11. All of these styles from Blues to Rock have lead to a wider range of new styles including hip-hop, rap, electronic dance music (EDM), contemporary R&B and more.
